Brass. It's actually pretty good as a weapons material, though the game doesn't let you use it as such.

Doesn't brass corrode quickly, though? It'd take a lot of work to maintain a brass weapon.

Lead, bronze, iron, and bone are my favorite materials in the game.

Lead is fun to imagine building (statues are my favorite lead building) with, bronze is an underrated metal/armor, iron is the mainstay of a quick defense (and the most prized metal 'safe metal') and bone is great for no-metal forts as it allows access to greaves, gauntlets, and stronger helms.

You don't need weapons if you have trombones.

Not if it is superiorly lacquered.
(Either way, still go for silver, it looks nicer.)

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

dwarf_reform likes microline for its color, cinnabar for its weight and color, and olivine for its color. He absolutely detests tin, zinc, lay pewter, and bismuth.

I just wish we could make beds out of any metal that allows sarcophagi..

Yeah, I like to bring olivine blocks for the first wall around the wagon I build, the rich green looks nice after everyone ends up all cave adapted and I force them upstairs to repaint the entryway for me.

You could try to micromanage artifact bed creation I suppose, which apparently the game thinks is easy:

I'm pretty sure brass doesn't corrode any quicker than many other common-use metals, and notably slower than carbon steel. Some brass types are in fact used on ships - for their exceptional corrosion resistance.

How does one quote properly?

Like so :P

If you want to reconstruct a quote tree (it's normally automatically done if you just hit "quote"), you need to use the proper tags: (quote) to begin a quote, or (quote=author) to also reference the author, (/quote) to end a quote. Of course, to work as tags, you have to enclose them in angular brackets instead of parentheses. The full linked quote format is a bit too big to manually reconstruct.

PS:

dwarf_reform likes microline
Neither metal nor alloy, and it's microcline, from micro (small) and cline (slope, gradation - something about the crystal structure; the word is related to "clinic" and "climate").

Bass and bronze are my two favorite early-game metals: Brass makes an awesome trade good and wonderful mid-value decorations and furniture for petty nobles and V.I.D. tombs and such.  Bronze, as someone said earlier, is cheap enough that you can load up on copper and tin ore and be swimming in decent-grade weapons, armor, and trade goods in no time after embark.

Silver and gold are kind of...whatever.  They're useful for satisfying demanding nobles and making some money, but they bring little to the table for me otherwise.  I do enjoy making coins out of them in older forts, purely to store in a vault of some kind for flavor purposes.

Steel is the king of metals in my forts.  The time consuming affair that is smelting enough of it to outfit entire squads only adds to its intrinsic value (unlike that lazy metal gold, which gives up its full value just after being dragged out of the ground).  The aforementioned vaults that my older forts house tend to be secure affairs with steel doors, chests, and traps to defend the fortress' wealth.

I largely neglect iron; I only use it for weapons or furniture when I absolutely cannot get my hands on flux stone.  In forts where I can make steel, I do tend to end up using excess iron to make chains and doors for my jails.  For some reason it seems fitting to lock them in iron rather than bronze or steel.

Silver is pretty nice for making bolts out of, imo. Silver bolts do a LOT of damage. I had only copper, silver and gold in my last fort so I ended up making a bunch of silver weapons and hoping that their added weight would help.
