Nothing wants to attack me.
« on: October 31, 2014, 02:02:05 pm »

So this is my 3rd fortress (ever) and it's been fairly succesful, it has 600k wealth and it's about 3 years old. I'm probably only survived this long because NOTHING has attacked me. No goblin civ, elf civ was destroyed, no FB's (pierced first layer cavern) no titans, nothing. Despite the fact that nothing other than humans and dwarves seem to exist, the liaison is always telling me about how 10-15 fortresses are being abandoned and about another 5-10 are being taken over by some civ that doesn't show up on the civ screen. I'm a bit confused and I will probably just retire the fortress if i can't fix this, I will have to retire the fortress out of a lack of challenge. So does anyone know what's happening?

6k wealth isn't even a blip on the radar to invaders, and FBs are kind of a crapshoot. Might get a bandit gang or a tiny group of necromancers/zombies passing through the area (possibly not even coming to attack you specifically,) but that'd be it.

Where are you in relation to the rest of your civ and potential enemies? Now they have to actually travel to attack you and they'll trash every fort along the way to reach you, or they won't show up at all due to distance.

I have no idea how to check that, in the embark screen I wasn't really worried about where everything was, just if i could a good embark or not. I'm gonna' assume that I'm quite far away from the rest of my civ if sieges matter on distance.

how many dwarves are in your fortress?  If you set a low pop cap, that is likely the problem.

You must have some terrible luck then.

So my guess is that the best course of action is to abandon the place.

Well, you can wait and see but if you're bored out of your mind then it would probably be best to retire it and start a new fort closer to the enemy. Rmemeber, you don't need to abandon anymore.  ;)

If you embarked to an island, or other isolated place, you cannot get any visits from other civs. This includes werebeasts, and necromancers, but not FBs or Titans. Titans actually have to be on the island too, but I don't know if the caverns are stretched enough to cover the area under the ocean.

Before embarking, check the neighbours. If it includes, goblins, then you will get an attack in the lifetime of the fort. However, if it says that one of the neighbours is at war with you, then you will have to prepare for the attack early, and hard. If you are at war, then the enemy won't give a fuck about your population, if you have enough wealth then they will attack - and the wealth required for them to attack is tremendously lower than when you're not at war.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

Thanks for the help, I genned a new world because i didn't want to abandon or retire the fortress (I thought when I'm more experienced having a rich and pretty much invincible fort would help for testing things like the Daycare, other megaprojects) this one is close to goblins and seems to be in a good spot.

In my worlds sieges are showing up later than in 31.x series. Now my fort usualy have 3-5 years before first gobos will come... But They usualy are comming in many numbers. And They are smarter now, when first squad leader was leaking like sponge after going into my trap field, rest just tried to climb over my walls. One squad managed to climb on walls and... There was really a lot of blood... and magma.

In my fortress dwarves are dying from old age.
Dwarven wine is a little bit like good chicken soup:  solid at room temperature.

I actually set up an island fortress intentionally to have a bastion for the dwarf civilization to make sure the goblins can't kill the entire dwarven empire, though I'll probably end up retiring it and not worrying about it when I get bored...

in fact, sieges in 34.xx didnt show up that fast, neither did ambushes. The first ambush never showed up before the 2nd winter, in fact, the first snatcher won't show up before that and won't more likely before the third, possibly the 4th or even the 5th year. One extreme case didnt have anything untill the 6th year when a siege suddenly showed up. Very simply put, you are just way too impatient.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.
