Separating your magma reservoir is only somewhat helpful in stopping magma creatures.

Properly separating your reservoir is 100% effective against non-vermin threats. Improperly separating your reservoir (including fortifications, floodgates, wall grates, doors, pumps, etc.) isn't nearly as effective.

A proper separation is either installing a magma-safe drawbridge, drawing the magma up through a floor grate, or casting obsidian.

If I had to guess, what happened is that the user in question had one of the cavern layers connected to the surface (or to his fort somewhere) with only trap barriers.  The level connected had a magma-pipe somewhere that created a fully pathable rout to the magma forge.  Since the magma man had a routable path, he destroyed the forge and walked up into the fort.

That was my guess as well, but the user said the buildings remained intact. I did a little research and discovered a bug report from v0.31 that describes the same behavior.

I had 100 z levels between the magma source(the sea), and the reservoir. I also cast obsidian to hold the magma in the reservoir. Nothing improper, nothing that would allow said imps or crabs to cross, yet they did.
