Coffer = chest.

Its named chest when out of wood, coffer when out of stone and box when out of glass. Still the same thing.

Cabinets are used to store clothings, Chest/coffer for everything else.

Preference.  I dont make many bags, so I try to save the ones I do have.  for sand or seeds or whatever.  rock is so plentiful, and I will have a skilled mason before a decent clothier on almost every embark.  Leather is better used for cloaks, hoods, gloves, etc than bags.

Yes, I wish bags ≠ chest/coffer/boxes also. Or that a chest would be acceptable for seeds and milled plants, either would be good.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

And why it's a problem, given that building asks for specific materials? Don't like, don't build from bags.
Not that it was very useful either way, other than in very exotic biomes, because yeah, usually there's a lot of mining waste... but when a dwarf got preference for some available material, why not?

Rite.   dont like it, dont build it.  and dont complain about designating 100 coffers at a time, and make sure  Charlie Cheesemaker doesnt get a gem encrusted masterwork bag when the king doesnt ::)

Or just forbid your bags when you're doing a mass-coffer-build like that? :V

Just make the kings room bigger and put more stuff in it, or perhaps an artifact. Problem solved.

I quite like bags as coffers, actually. An experienced weaver/dyer/clothier trio can mass produce hundreds of high quality dyed bags, worth 600-800 dwarfbucks each (after sewing on a cloth image), just from pigtails and dimple dye. Effective, thrifty and colorful!
