Well, since you are playing Masterwork, that actually explains pretty well why you are having a terrible time getting started. Even though I have never played any kind of mod before, from what the others explain to me about it then I agree that it's better to get used to vanilla first. Doing so will save 75% of your problems.. If you insist on starting with Masterwork(which you do), then I would go to the DF wiki and every time you want to look something up, go to the Masterwork page for it. Almost every page for a topic that also exists in masterwork has a page on the wiki. But you will still have a hard time getting help on the forums, as most people here don't play masterwork. I guess.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

Here's the masterwork forum if you're determined to ask others about the problems rather than checking the wiki:

I liked LNP and starter packs. The current version though I can't use my computer thinks its a virus.
Older version there is no DFhack., there is something called DFInt but it says there is something wrong with it.
I got no clue how to fix among few other things.
I like Masterwork better issue with that is I can't get the < and > keys to look underground and I can only channel the earth not dig down.
And I am having building issues, to build above ground.

Uh, that sounds like the old 2D version of DF. The one that's over six years old.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Necromancy may be legal in Cyrodiil, but few admit to practicing it after it was banned by Archmage Traven.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

There are a TON of versions of the LNP... 5 just for DF 40.24.  At least two for DF 40.23.

If you go to one of the mirrors, it will list most of them.. about 50 for DF 40.xx (http://df.wicked-code.com/)

You should definitely be able to get something fairly recent with dfhack if you want that.
