Welcome to Bring Your Own Pokemon mafia. This is a themed BYOR, and as such you send me the name of one pokemon when you sign up for the game, and I and my co-mod, Scripten, build you a role based on your submission.
If you didn’t notice from the above comment, I have a partner in this project:
Scripten!
Please maintain civility throughout the game.
Despite how early I’m putting it into signups, the game will not start until at least November 3, as I have a college visit next weekend and a lot of work this week. I will be taking signups until November 1st, at which point I will close signups and anybody who wants to join will go on the replacement list.
The basic rules list and two spoilers blatantly stolen from Wuba. There are also several special rules below them, which are important to pay attention to.
Basic rules:
- No PMing to anyone but me, the mod. I won't make this an action either because PMing is stupid.
- No Quoting of the Mod in relation to PMs. You are free to quote anything in the thread. You may also paraphrase.
- Semi-hammers in effect. Days last on a soft 72 hours, unless majority is voting for any player or No Lynch. If a player is hammered, there is to be no more talking. If you accidentally post something after the hammer, you can and should edit out the post.
- Nights last 24 hours or whenever all the actions are sent in. If you do not wish to action, please send a PM stating so.
- Weekends count for 0 hours, as I enjoy my free time on them.
- Extensions require a majority vote. This will be limited to 2 extensions per Day, because, seriously, make up your minds already. Extensions are an additional 48 hours.
- There may be Post Restrictions. These should not interfere with gameplay.
- I cannot answer questions about player's roles unless that player's role is available to be seen. I cannot answer questions about your role in thread. I can, however, answer generic questions. I will simply ask you to rephrase the question, if I deem the question is bad.
- Please vote in a manner that is viewable with my poor eyesight. If I can't see your vote, I might skip it. I can't trust LurkerTracker to do my vote counts for me, but I'll at least check it for semi-accuracy.
Bold and Red makes it really easy to see.
- If I leave the thread open at Night, do not post unless you have an ability allowing you to.
Special Rules:
- Each Pokemon has two special stats: Hit Points and two types. Hit Points determines how many points of night-and-day-action damage you can take before being eliminated from the game, while the types determine the effectiveness of aggressive actions against you.
- Most targeted actions will have a type attached to them. This is used to determine the effectiveness of that action against the target. This uses the standard pokemon (Gen 6) offense-defense type effectiveness, and will increase or decrease damage accordingly. If you don’t know what the hell that means (and there probably many of you who don’t), look it up.
- Kills and protects operate differently in this game than in others: kills inflict a certain amount of damage to the opposing pokemon, while protect either block all damage or a certain amount on the targeted pokemon. The standard mafiakill works the same way: it is a 60 damage normal-type action. There may also be ways to heal a pokemon, which remove damage from it.
- Lynches work as they do in the rules above, and instantly remove the lynched player from the game (unless they have an ability that says otherwise).
- Some actions will have a priority level specified. Any that do not have specified numbers are of default priority (+0). Actions will follow the Natural Action Resolution within their respective priority slots, starting from the highest priority and going to the lowest.
- Placeholder for the first rule that I inevitably forgot.
You are not in the game until I receive a role. Also, don't under- or overestimate your abilities. And have fun! Because, honestly, that's the whole point.
Common questions:
Q. What is a Cycle/Phase?
A. A Cycle is a Day and Night Phase. There are two Phases in a Cycle.
Q. Can I use more than one ability during a Phase?
A. Not unless your role specifically states as such.
Q. Can I self-target?
A. Not unless the action specifically states that you can. It is now labelled [target/self] or [self] for easy viewing!
Q. Can I target 2 or more people?
A. Only if stated in the action with [target x(some number)].
Q. If my action doesn't have a Phase to be used in, can I use it any time?
A. Yes!
Q. Can I mafiakill and use an ability on the same Night?
A. This counts as using two abilities, so not unless you are allowed to use two abilities.
Here's a fine example of how actions and roles will look:
Role Name
Alignment: Alignment_Type
Wincon: You win when you have properly managed to be an example.
(Auto) Auto Ability: This ability is automatically used when possible.
(Day) Day Ability [target]: This ability is used during the Day on the target you specify.
(Mafiakill) Mafiakill Ability [target]: This ability replaces the Mafiakill ability. You may not use more than one mafiakill ability per Cycle.
(1-Shot, Night) 1-Shot Night Ability [targets x(1-5)]: This ability is used during the Night and can only be used once per game. This may target up to 5 people.
(2-Shot) 2-Shot Ability [target/self]: This ability may be used at any time but only twice per game. This ability may self-target.
(Unusable) Unusable Ability: This ability cannot be used for some reason.
Quick Q & A for alignments:
Q. Does the Mafia have a kill they can use at Night?
A. Yes. It is called the Mafiakill. It is available to all members of the Mafia unless otherwise stated.
Q. Does the SK/Cult have a built-in kill/convert?
A. No. No other alignment besides Mafia has any group ability available to them.
You are given one of these 13 alignments when the game starts. Usually, it will be Town, but you might be lucky!
Alignment: Town
Wincon: You win when all anti-Town factions are dead. (Mafia, Cult, SK, Lyncher, and Assassin)
Alignment: Mafia
Wincon: You win when your team equals or outnumbers the remaining players and there are no ways to stop you.
Alignment: Survivor
Wincon: You win if you are alive when the game ends.
Alignment: SK
Wincon: You win when all other players are dead.
Alignment: Cult
Wincon: You win when your team equals or outnumbers the remaining players and all other killing roles are dead.
Alignment: Watcher
Wincon: You win when the game reaches Day [day_number].
Alignment: [alignment_type]-Ally
Wincon: You win when [alignment_type] wins.
Alignment: Brother
Wincon: You win when [player_name] wins.
Alignment: Jester
Wincon: You win when you are lynched.
Alignment: Lyncher
Wincon: You win when [player_name] is lynched.
Alignment: Martyr
Wincon: You win when you are killed, but not when you are lynched.
Alignment: Assassin
Wincon: You win when [player_name] is killed, but not when they are lynched.
Alignment: Outsider
Wincon: You win when [other_wincon] is accomplished.
If you have any further questions (and I’m sure there will be many) please ask.
