How do templates work?

As a paladin I can take up to +3 LA of templates, Giglamesh has said. Does that mean this dragon, or this dragon, for example?

Is it the second one? (this seems a bit little!) In which case I don’t think I should be a kobold paladin, but a bard.

Or is it the first one, where I could take Level 3 of the levels 1-3? (this seems a bit much!)

Or is it this from the srd half dragon, which just seems a bit… well, +8STR? Crikey.


edit: but really, why take a kobold if it's going to be such a special kobold?

This is a class version of the template, so no.

This isn't the template, just a few notes on how the standard template works for a few given dragon types.

The Psychic Warrior claw builds tend to be rather overly powerful with expansion and a few other self-buffs. I'm going to say no to that.

Psionics aren't common, and mostly seen on the beasties of the First. Probably should have put that in the OP. The perils of late night posting, I suppose.

Yeah, I was like "Huh, doing as much ranged damage as Goliath with a greatsword and 18 STR 5/day?", with no pre-reqs.

Then I was like...oh yeah, level 1. Most people don't even have longbows yet. I didn't really want to "trick" you, so I called myself out.
