Floor bars = Cattle grid
« on: October 25, 2014, 07:55:06 am »

Simple idea.

Set it so that four legged animals that can't fly will not walk on floor bars. Easy way to leave your cats, dogs, yaks etc. behind you.

The problem with doors (and I presume hatches) is that critters slip through while the dwarf has them open.

I hate trying to use danger rooms and having tons of animals crawling into them through doors.

Wait, wait, wait, WAIT!!! Won't this make it so 2/3rds of dangerous creatures can't cross those?

The issue I foresee is that if such a thing were introduced, grates/bars/etc would only slow down the creatures, and risk hurting them, not stop them.

Building destroyers should be able to destroy them. In 'combat movement' critters should be able to jump a tile or two.

A measly little floor grate isn't going to stop a cat. Or any creature with natural climbing skill, for that matter.

uhh, wouldn't it be easier for a 4 legged animal, EX: dwarf weighs 100 lb, 100 divided by 2 equals 50 on each foot, while if a 100 lb tiger were to go, it would be 100 divided by 4, making 25 on each foot, making the tiger more comfortable. I'm pretty sure that floor grates would only stop hooves, not sure but maybe, which means that anything 4 footed could go across, except cows.

foot size and balance.  The larger you make the gaps between the bars/grating, the harder it is for animals to traverse quickly.  And dwarves can even wear shoes/boots to increase their shoesize.

1) Lots of 4 legged animals are just fine on bars. Rats, for instance (psych experiments we have them on bars all the time, they are chill about it). Cats, anything without hooves as suggested above sounds like a good bet, really. Some 4 legged animals may even PREFER bars, like monkeys or sloths.

2) I'm not entirely sure what the gameplay purpose here is other than creating a lot of problems with invasions that have to be solved. Keeping livestock out would be better accomplished with a new special door type "livestock gate" or something, that animals can't sneak through no matter what, unless being led. But invaders simply ignore, or it minorly slows them.

3) Why are dwarves immune for some reason? Doesn't make much sense. They'd be better than a critter with hooves, but not any better than any other mammal, and probably worse at walking on bars than non-hooved animals with 4 legs, through less general steadiness

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

I think it's more of a psychological thing. Certain animals wouldn't trust the ground. Mountain goats would probably walk right over.

The reason two legged critters are better than four legged critters at this (size issues aside) is that two legged critters can easily look at where their feet are going. Four legged critters don't find it easy to place their back two feet without getting them stuck and / or broken. I mean, cattle grids are real things that real medium to large sized four legged animals can't cross. I don't see that the controversy is there, really.

Size issues and climbing ability are points well taken, though. If the critter has significant climbing skills (cat), is small enough to stand on one bar at at time (rat) or large enough that one foot/hoof lands on more than one bar (dragon, forgotten beast, etc.) then it should be ignored. I know from experience that dogs also hate them, btw. :P

Hell, for that matter I'd be quite happy if they only worked on tame or trained animals (although that would be hard to rationalize).

That's not what I meant. The rat sized bars are sized for them to have different bars for their front and rear legs, and they have no issues. Here's a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXsqX99GBAA

They have actual feet that can flex and grip a bit. Actual soft feet can also FEEL very easily the surface and small details they encounter. So you don't need to look.

Hooves cannot grip, and hooves cannot feel out the exact shapes as well. Which is why I suspect the real life cattle grids work on... cattle. And similar ungulates. and why I suggest that hooved animals in DF would be a pretty easy to implement RAW tag that could then be used for this, reasonably. Do you actually know whether real life cattle grids work on any non-hooved animals? I suspect they do not.

They work on dogs, which I said.
