None of the days of the weeks or months explicitly state that one of those gods is the true one in the same way that Anno Domini does for Christ.  And even if they did they're all deities that basically nobody cares about anymore.  Jesus is still kindof a big deal by comparison, and his divinity is far more contentious.

Would you prefer a BG and AG? Before and after Ghandi?

No I'd prefer the B.C.E./C.E system that would be very easy to transition to and which is already being used in a lot of places and contexts.

The only BIG BIG problem with that system... is that BCE is too many letters.

And that is far worse a problem.

(unfortunately I am not joking... that extra letter in BCE has always been the reason why I avoided the CE system except in academic writing)

Second that. In fact, it inspired me to propose a totally different system called the B/A system. Before, After. only so we could spare the vast amount of food energy spent on a global scale when typing that extra letter.

Or just do something simpler like switch it to O.E./N.E. or O.E./C.E. universally. Just don't call it the "Modern Era" or whatever.

It's a bit late off the mark, but aside from the good point Leafsnail has made, the other reason the switch is significant is that while for us the dates still carry religious implications, most people a few generations from now won't remember that.

I... don't really see how Anno Domini implies that Jesus is the One True Savior (trademark pending). I mean, we could switch to the old system of giving time by the name of the current ruler, making this the year 9 Merkel - but that doesn't mean that she's your Chancellorette.

FD, I believe you're underestimating the resilience of religions against progress and the religiousness of large parts of the world.

Anno Domini literally proclaims that Jesus is the Lord, and that the years belong to him.

... I'd say probably not. I'm not even sure the majority of people my age, nevermind younger, actually know what AD means. Last time I remember hearing someone being asked, I think they said "After Death" (shit, critical education failure but I'm pretty sure that's what I was originally taught in freaking school) -- and the area I grew up in was/is about as religious as western culture gets. Doesn't help that neither the BC nor AD (or BCE or CE, or whatever) thing is ever actually used outside of certain parts of academia/history related stuff. It's honestly kinda' useless for every day needs, which is another way of saying it's straight up doomed to fade into obscurity within a handful of generations.

I'm actually kinda' surprised no one here's just suggested PH and H for appellations -- prehistory and history. The latter can start however far back it was we found the first writing bits, and the former can be everything before that. Sure, it would technically make our years a bigger number, but it's not like the vast majority of its use isn't shortened to two digits anyway.

I'm fine with this, in of I don't care, but I am annoyed by the people supporting this change because it's old, instead of because it's, I don't know, religious or something.

Also, didn't one of the founding fathers specifically say that the United States wasn't founded based off of Christian ideals?

I really don't care what the names are, so long as it's something I can easily remember and distinguish.

Actually, very few of the significant ones were devout Christians, at least in ways which were understandable to the mainstream, and they explicitly established the U.S. as a secular state. It's just that the rabid nature of Puritanism tends to bleed over into everything around it; there's a reason Europe (and Britain in particular) didn't want the blighters.

Was Anyone Ever Actually Offended By B.C./A.D.?

Not that I've ever spoken to. Don't think I've ever met anyone offended by city-funded christmas displays either.

I've met people annoyed by city-funded, compulsory equal time given to every politically correct seasonal display we can think of, though.
