Crosbow can be a choice, too. Enemies will be injured to some extent, but will likely be still alive, which is good for early military training. (However, with the new ranged weapon nerfing and separating of moving and attacking speed, it may be less effective.)

I want to set up a trap hall at the entrance to my fort.

Consider cleaning / miasma in your setup (even if you do not worry about reanimation), I never found it fun when goblin sieges lasted only minutes but produced hauling jobs for a whole season.

Gabbro mechanisms and steel/iron discs could be cleansed with magma after large engagements.

I always mixing 3 manacing spikes, because They have great penetration and they're offten damaging internal organs, 3 spiked balls, because They are breaking bones, and 3 snormous corkscrews. Goblins and trolls can not pass even 5 rows of wooden traps. Usualy...

This is good advice for the average trap.  Overkill is overkill, and 3-5 weapons a trap is a good number.  Even 2, if its high quality and the weapons are good.  The issue is if one weapon gets stuck than they all do, and the trap stops working until a mechanic gets out to it to unclog it.

The reasoning being that if one weapon in a trap of 10 weapons gets stuck than you lost out of the 9 weapons, but if 1 weapon in a trap of 4 gets stuck than you lost out of 3.

My normal setup: 4 steel/iron/bronze serrated disks, 3 silver spiked balls, and 3 iron/bronze/steel cork screws or menacing spikes.

My personal favourite trap configuration is a 10-20 tile long hallway with 10[Usually glass] serrated discs/silver hammers on each tile. If you want things to get done, do them WELL.

That's a tad bit overkill. I normally only use them in a 3X6 hallway, with my military on the other end, to weed out a few (18 to be exact) enemies, so I don't have my dwarves being swarmed, which was enough for troglodytes to beat master dwarves at a 15 to 2 fight.

Considering that I've had to deal with goblin sieges as large as my forts population[200-300, usually], I don't think its overkill. Although in 40.xx, that might have changed.

I've faced a large siege of 300+ before. My 200, mostly bronze clad, dwarves were ready for them. Even had my own cave dragons to toss at them.

Cave Dragons > Weapon Traps. They're about 122% more fun. Because fucking CAVE DRAGONS. I just like having little bits of goblin fly everywhere. Its almost like a mini game. See how many different colours of blood you can paint the walls.

Cave Dragons, Mountain Dragons, Dragons, Hydras, and Rocs> weapon traps, or even most of my dwarves. I just love seeing my once enemies working side by side with my military. (Mountain dragons are a flying dragon I made, 5/6ths the size of a mountain dragon, flock dragons, food/drink/item stealing, that are a lot less skilled naturally: not as high biting or striking, but much higher dodging) I only use weapon traps when I'm not doing danger rooms or having a huge military.

Yeah, i know, but look on this from other side, wood is pretty cheap now and you can make really fast a lot of them. After two years your trees will be regrowing, and you must cut them down or They parts will be callapsing on surface injuring/killing your dwarfes, not only on surface, but in undergounds too, because callapsing part of wood can breach many floor levels at once... I learned this hard way.

Wood is generally not as good for spiked balls since it has a low weight, but you can make up for that with gratuitous amounts of them. Generally wood is fine for unarmored or lightly armored stuff, but if you forsee using this against goblins or humans (who will have at least metal armor), consider adding some glass components as well

You should probably make some crossbows too, not for the weapon traps, but so your dwarves can defend themselves in your low-metal fortress (which if it's anything like the way I play, means you are reserving all your metal for armor and weapons for your dwarves, and use wood and glass to make as much in terms of defense as you can without wasting limited resources)

I used to go 1 menacing spike, 1 spiked ball and 1 serrated disc with the most lethal ones nearest to the entrance. Why? They were less likely to actually kill and so less likely to jam. Instead they were pretty much guaranteed to disable an enemy enough so any trap later would kill it. In cases of too many enemies, they would still largely maim anything, which the weaker traps might not have managed, so almost nothing would enter unscathed
