What should I use in my weapon traps?
« on: October 24, 2014, 09:46:19 pm »

I want to set up a trap hall at the entrance to my fort.
Its not a dodgeme trap, just a straight murder hall, but I don't no what I should fill my weapon traps with.
I'm thinking serrated discs for the multi-hit, but I also need to take materials into account.
Metal is kinda scarce, but I have an abundance of wood and I can make glass, so what should I go with?

Serrated Glass Discs used to be a favorite. Not sure how well they measure up anymore, but they used to shred enemies who walked on them.

Serrated glass discs are cool. Serrated steel discs are the best. I used those instead of a military once. The gibs were pretty ludicrous. Although serrated discs jam quickly, which means that you either need LOTS of them or backup in case the entire trap hallway gets jammed. I've found using silver war hammers in weapon traps does good damage and very rarely gets jammed in this.

Steel serrated disks, corkscrews, and silver spiked ball. Serrated disks will cut in three times, the corkscrew will pierce once but heavily, and the silver spiked ball will hit three times like a giant hammer.

+1 for spiked balls.  Too valuable, but quite good at crippling and maiming.

Menacing Spikes > Corkscrews in my experience. And spiked balls work best for making enemies dodge into nearby pit traps. Otherwise, serrated discs work much better. And create up to 47% more gibs. Gibs for the gibs god.

I'm hearing a pretty strong argument for serrated discs, and I think I'll mix some spiked balls in there.
Would wood be enough for the spiked balls or do I need to go metal?
I'm expecting an elf siege soon.

Wood is more than enough against elves and other lightly armored targets, like animals or soft(er) FBs.

If you mass them they make up for their lower penetration with crits to help against stronger things.  I use them to cripple targets so my military can mop up the kills, but with the pulp effect I cant vouch for their non-lethality this version.

Wouldn't glass be better though?

Also, the thing about spiked balls is they get 3 hits per ball.

@cptn  not sure.  Comparing their value would probably say yes.  Wood is worse than just about everything, but is quick and easy to make.  Also lower in value, so you can stave off the 6 megabeasts in one season you tend to get with high fort value.

Didn't realise spiked balls get multi-hit, I think I'll definitely go with a combination of them and discs.
Thanks for the help guys  :)

Well . . . well . . .

Oh!  gibs make more zombies, and slashy/pokey weapons get jammed more than blunt ones    8)

I want to set up a trap hall at the entrance to my fort.

Consider cleaning / miasma in your setup (even if you do not worry about reanimation), I never found it fun when goblin sieges lasted only minutes but produced hauling jobs for a whole season.
