10th of Limestone, 126

The outpost liaison has arrived, the gold lust clearly evident in his eyes.  As an escort is sent out to take him to 4maskwolf, a few of us watch him depart.  "I don't think we can hold the word back, even if we wanted to." I said.

Mastah Cheese scoffed.  "They're just here to take our wealth."

Jim frowned at this.  "Will they attack us?  Take it by force?"

Shakerag steadied his grip on his pick.  "It'll cost them their lives."

Several others voices started up, until I slapped the wall a few times.  "Enough!  They are dwarves!  Of course they chase after gold!  You lot would probably come too!  Be sensible and keep your beards on your chin and not in your ears!"

19th of Limestone, 126

One of the glassmaker suddenly dropped what she was doing, got a vacant look in her eyes, and walked off without a word.  Odd.  I asked someone to keep an eye on her.

4maskwolf requests the obvious things; dogs to train in defense, booze, coal for where we can't get the magma, and various other sundries.  In the meantime, I trade for several nanny goats, another hen, lots of booze, and a cat.  Tired of all these vermin.

The liaison presents us with a list of requests.

The stonecrafts are our best bet to impress them.  I offer a couple gold nuggets to have the purity tested at the mountainhome, but we can already tell the quality is good.

That glassmaker, Tun Vabokothos, has claimed a glass furnace and is gathering ingredients, all without changing expression at all.  It's quite unnerving.

27th of Limestone, 126

The glassmaker must have found what she wanted.  Whenever anyone tries to see what she is doing, though, she stares at the intruder with a soul-piercing gaze until they leave.

3rd of Sandstone, 126

The glassmaker wandered in to my office today when I was checking the books, holding something.  "Hello, Tun.  How have you been feeling?"

She just looked at me in confusion.  "I have no idea.  What's this?"  She holds up what she is carrying.

"It's absolutely exquisite.  Is that what you've been working on?"

"Did... I make this?  It's... nicer than anything I could hope to make.  I sure don't remember... huh."  She put it down and walked off.  Who knows?

10th of Sandstone, 126

A lookout woke everyone up screaming.  "Flee!  Shut the gates!

I rally up every dwarf who knows a crossbow.  "Jim, take these troops, rally up, and slay the beast!"  Jim looks shaken, but rallies herself and grabs her crossbow.  They are our best hope.

The ones able (Jim appears to have passed out in fear) go out to slay the beast, who has already claimed many lives.

13th of Sandstone, 126

Just as quickly as it began, it is over.

After killing many of our livestock and several dwarves that couldn't escape, the beast turned back into a human before our squad could get there.  Our brave soldiers took no risks and slew the thing.  My wife, tonnot98, struck the killing blow, smashing its head into gore, but the report she brings back chills me.  "It begged for mercy; as if it didn't understand what was going on.  I'll never forget the fear in its eyes."  She shuddered, and began to sob.  No one will sleep well tonight.

All told, we lost three dwarves and nine animals.  I didn't personally know any of the dwarves.  One was a simple clerk, who probably died in fear.  A fish cleaner was out there as well.  Finally, one of the soldiers was caught out of position and struck down before ready to fight back.

Kogan Kizbizavuz was a Town Militia.
Bembul Oddomudil was a Town Fish Cleaner.

Melbil Mebanstakud was a Mafia Informant.

The next morning, Mastah Cheese woke me up roughly, shaking my entire bed side to side.  "Get up!  You have to see this!  NOW!"  I stumble out of bed and follow him down to the crypt.

Several dwarves are there, loudly shouting and arguing.  "What's going on?" I bellow over the others.  Mastah Cheese shoves a paper into my hand.  "Read this!  Melbil had it!"

I look down.  It's torn and bloodied, but the meaning is clear.  Melbil was here to account for our gold!  Someone DID want to take it from the fortress!  Even worse, it looked like someone was involved from the beginning; maybe even one of the first seven to come out here!  There were at least a couple others here now that were in on this, trying to get our gold siphoned off for the wealth of others.  Clearly, this was no going to stand.

Jim was sitting down, her head in her hands.  I'm not even sure she should be in the militia; her heart simply isn't in conflict.  Shakerag and 4maskwolf were practically shaking with rage; Shakerag in particular had a little froth on his beard.  The Dark Star was shaking her head, saying "I knew it" over and over.  Tonnot98, who had followed me down, tried to comfort little Onul.  Than402 and Deus Asmoth looked concerned.  Radio Controlled was trying to calm people down.

But we all knew what this meant.

There was a rat in the fortress.  And we must find it.

Stopping here because of dramatic tension.  Shakerag, congrats on being our first non-mood Legendary; you are a miner beyond compare.  May your name blink ever gloriously.

Jim, you really have a terrible personality for battle.  You were actually asleep when the attack happened, but it's my narrative, so there.

Also, this is taking a lot longer than I expected.  I keep getting distracted.

This gets better and better. You know, after this concludes and we all die from gold-crazed traitors (or more likely, zombie mussels) there should be a WIFOM Fortress-themed mafia game.

Naps aren't going to take themselves. And there's a werecreature out there, like heck am I going out there.

You can put me in the fortress guard so that when I beat people I get horrified and nauseous in the middle of acts of justice and stop short of killing criminals (justly).

This is actually a pretty good idea. I only made Jim a hunter because the dwarf liked crossbows so I thought it'd be a nice profession for them. Unfortunately, they didn't like murdering tortoises.

I'm not sure that's how it works though. Seeing a corpse definitely causes horror, but I don't know if seeing a freshly-caused injury does.

Tonnot98 had a "witnessed trauma" negative thought.  Jim has two separate preferences that point away from combat; I'll try to grab screens of both if I remember.

I could be the commander, if he can't. I've got some crossbow skills...

Once he gets some skill in discipline he should be fine for combat, shouldn't he?

Just a note that I'll be out tomorrow (City Museum in St. Louis here we come!) and I'm never around on weekends, so don't expect OP updates.

Nah, webadict ran the old DF games. Although I probably could run one. Been a while since I hosted a game.

I'll take the Weaponsmith if you don't mind.

The Weaponsmith is a popular fellow with a huge family (two pages of cousins).  He has an aunt, a niece, and two cousins at the fort (all unnammed.)  His wife is the glassmaker who got possesed.

14th of Sandstone, 126

The weaponsmith, Mephanteras, spoke with me today concerning the progress of the forges.  I told him that we first had to determine the best course of access to the magma. While attempting to pump it to the surface is required for getting it in the fortress proper, quite a bit of work would have to be put in for that.  We may have temporary forges at the magma level itself, deep within the earth.

22nd of Sandstone, 126

Another nine migrants showed up today.  The manifest is below, as usual.  This group in particular got cold stares and not much reception.  Were any of these in on the conspiracy against our fortress?  A couple members of the old guard, in particular, wanted to bar the gates and lock them out, but cooler heads prevailed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

5th of Timber, 126

Another dwarf went in the stream.  Considering no one has seen anything, I think we just have clumsy fisherdwarves.

1st of Moonstone, 126

I woke up this morning to a note left on my head.  It was from 4maskwolf, who stated that he needed a billon table in his dining room by the end of the week.

I'm not sure why, since we don't have any billon.  Or the silver to make it.  Nor does he have a dining room.

That night, I had a horrible nightmare.  Legions of elves descended upon us.  But these were no normal elves; no, these were beasts of terror.  Horrible, undead elves, their corpses animated by fell magic.  They shambled up to the fortress, unstoppable by bolt or blade.  They slew our defenders, then poured upon our civilians.  Horrible visions of wailing dwarves and gnashing undead, my last sight of them slaughtering my family...

My screams of horror woke up dozens.  I slept no more that night.

No idea what happened here.  We got an undead siege, where two elf zombies showed up then immediately left.

Oh, wait, there we go.

7th of Moonstone, 126

Horror.  Horror, death, and doom.

A band of necromancers came to our fortress, and brought to horrible unlife some of the animals the werebeast had slaughtered.  Our marksdwarf squad mobilized to respond, but was butchered.  All those fine dwarves dead... including my wife... and my daughter...

((The paper is crumpled somewhat here and stained.))

I do not know if I can continue.

Minkot Likotkadol was a Town Marksdwarf
onul Kudfeb was a Town Baby
Captain Kaladin Anrizlokum was a Marksdwarf

Jim Groovester was a Survivor Marksdwarf
tonnot98 was a Town Marksdwarf
Sodel Uzolmatul was a Town Marksdwarf
Bomrek Koganunib was a Town Marksdwarf

WELL THEN.

EDIT:  Fixed image.  Also forgot to rename again, but that's fixed.

17th of Moonstone, 126

Work continues, though we despair.  The necromancers have left their unholy creation to guard the gates of our fortress, and without any military, we have no way of getting rid of it.  The gates remain barred.  No one gets in, no one gets out.

We decided to construct a magma forge in place, and the work for that is largely complete.  At the suggestion of Mephansteras, I set up a small dorm area for metalworkers who need a break, without requiring them to climb all the way up the stairs.

17th of Moonstone, 126
Addendum

It appears the wife of the clerk who was involved in the conspiracy against our gold jumped over the wall and made a break for it.  The camel caught up with her, and...

In any case, we can only assume that she was in on the act, and was sending a message out about the attacks.  Who knows what is happening...

Nil Tholoban was a Mafia Craftsdwarf.

25th of Moonstone, 126

Well, at least the gate is already shut.

27th of Moonstone, 126

The cyclops was destroyed by the camel.  All thoughts of going out are now gone.

4th of Opal, 126

Tensions are rising in the fortress.  More than one dwarf is unable to sleep.

There is talk of raising a much stronger army and breaking out, but we don't have the supplies yet.  We have copper available, but no iron to make steel.  We have no one trained in armorsmithy.  It is... doable, but it would take time, much time.  The metalworks must be fired up.  I ask a second dwarf to operate the secondary smelter to speed things along.  Marble excavation is halted to dig more of the tetrahedrite veins we have encountered.  I commission a couple more picks as well.

7th of Opal, 126

Strange reports from outside.  A dwarf swears they saw the camel attack and kill another of the werebeasts from earlier during the night, but there is no evidence of it visible outside.  Everyone is on edge here.

9th of Opal, 126

A bittersweet day today, as Deus Asmoth gives birth to another daughter.  She grieved again for her husband Captain Kaladin who perished in the attack of the necromancers.

I weep for them all.

11th of Opal, 126

Sleeping in the deeps, one of the miners, Avuz Kubukumril stood straight up in bed, then headed up the stairs without saying anything or looking at anyone.  Strange.

I see what you did there.

20th of Opal, 126

The entranced miner gave birth to a child practically without breaking a sweat.  She continues to work on whatever it is she is doing.

Put that on the wiki, folks; moody dwarves can give birth without being interrupted.
