"Ah, but that's the thing! Sure, Runic magic makes a great example for newer magicians, but it does have uses beyond the basics. It's hard to find books on them, and even then it's hard to use - A single stray line can absolutely ruin the spell - but it IS a fully fledged system of magic. Hiro theorizes that if he could find the proper runes, he might actually be able start permanently binding spells! Oh, and that's another advantage: Binding spells to items is far easier with runes, since you can perform the rite, and just scratch the proper rune onto the thing. Runes are amazingly powerful, if you can find the proper runes. The problem is finding them; with the advent of freeform magic, most copies of the tomes on them have fallen into disrepair, meaning that we largely only have vague hints at what the runes do, and having to reverse engineer their actual use an application. It's surprisingly fun, actually, if occasionally painful, to trace an old rune, chant some spell, and see what it does. Kind of like opening a present, if presents were usually rigged to release toxic clouds once every ten times or so."

Technically though, Freeform Magic was around first, most of the races that incorporate magic into their biology use it instinctively, Runic was only invented After humans began delving into Magic and found logical and mathematical ways to channel magic, hence Runic was created and became rather popular as it did not require a imaginative mind to use, although once the more magically affain races started making themselves known in Arcanic circles and councils, freeform was introduced and due to its utility, rapidly overshadowed Runic in popularity, although Runic is still used as a teaching method~

From what I understand, all runes are mathematical derivations from base runes which were discovered who knows when. Perhaps Hiro should start mathing them if he isn't already~?
