The crisp autumn winds surround you as you walk forward towards the cave. The slightly damp ground belies the cold rain that forced the group to camp early the previous day. Though now it is mostly dried, you can still feel mud sticking to your boots. The leaves themselves form armies and attempt to defeat the giants among them when the wind gives its chilling scream. The skittering plant life fails to penetrate your clothing and they are brushes aside like so many before them.
Your group has traveled fifty miles from Riverwatch at the behest of your patron. You do not know your compatriots but the man who hired you was quite clear that each would be vital for the task that lied ahead. Though you have had a few days to acquaint yourselves it has not filled in any proper details.
Your journey started, as many do, within a tavern. You often took odd jobs to make ends meet. One cannot subsist on prowess alone, which forced you to take work as a mercenary. While your reasons are your own it is not any mystery as to why your work has been so profitable as of late.
A strange man in a robe which obscured his features had offered you a small task. He claimed that a cave with a small tribe of kobolds had offended his sensibilities. He offered a vast amount of money for a job well done, as well as a promise for more work further down the line. Whether you accepted immediately or whether some other circumstance required further dealings does not matter. The simple fact is that your funds had begun to run low and no matter how suspicious the man, you knew you had to take the job lest financial ruin await.
This is what brings you before the cave whose features resemble a wolf’s head more than a rock formation. Those of you who inhale the scent find that the autumn morning has done nothing to stop the rancid smell of rotting meat from permeating the air. Bones of cattle and deer litter the outside while a small humanoid skull rests atop a bent wooden spear.
Your quarry lies within. The man made it perfectly clear that there would be seven kobolds within the cave. The seventh, and largest, was apparently the leader. The man demanded this creature's prized possession, a bent copper rod with the likeness of a skull at the top, be brought to him. Now, all that was left was to accomplish the job.
