kk.  Fort is on my agenda tomorrow.  With decent frames Ill have it see its first year and a story.

Ohh!  what is visitor policy?!  Can we detain them?

Personal choice of the overseer, as all notes on how to run the place were lost to the river.

We need stuff set up for the next overseer.  Nothing will progress without it.  We cant expect prisoners to make their lives better in their own.  After all, they are here for a reason.  But, even the scum needs a bed to sleep into.

A drainage ditch was dug out to flood into the shallow cavern.  It was right below us the whole time, which was good.  It was full of giant bats, which was bad.  We got the ditch set up and secured to prevent escape, but at the cost of a guard.

The bat flew off into the night after it had its fill.

I have decided to override all nobility roles, for the time being.  I don't expect nor want them in the future.

A guards dorm was built, and a well established away from the freezing river.  That's right, for about 1 month a year the river freezes.  It interrupted out waterfall damning twice;  When it froze it astounded us, and its rapid melting interrupted out final preparations as well.  Somebody is going to have to finish that damn.  Our frames will suffer soon enough what with all the human blood and water both topside and below.  The caverns are absolutely flooded.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A farm and treefarm/pasture was dug out, and a prisoner dorm dug.  I suggest we use them for the most dangerous work, but must be mindful of their escape attempts and non-military status.  Farming should be a priority, as well as smelting.

*Consider keeping the weaponsmith and armorsmith out of the blocks.  Too much potential for a riot.

We were forced to destroy the Depot with the dwarven caravan on it, but we requested flux and metal.  And booze.  They asked for the following:

Took a dive into the save to take a look around.  Pisskop, you forgot the rule that 60% has to be military.  You only have 5 when you needed as a minimum 9.  Also, you forgot the rule to keep the underground in its most basic state.  Putting the crypt and dining hall, as well as the statues in them, breaks that rule.  Just a warning this time, but remember this in the future if you take another turn.

AFA military.  Aye.

There's a place where I saw some caskets being readied, so I thought of that as a crypt.

Anyway, we need an overseer after Hugo.  Could repeat the list, but I would rather have more people.

Much apologies for the delay.

Journal of Hugol Commonabbeys...

Granite 1, 1051

As the new year begins, I take over the overseer position from Pkop, who had taken it on an emergency basis after the unexpected death of our captain Zanzetkuken. Hopefully I am more up to the stresses of the task than her, as I have had a year to prepare while the position was thrust upon her unexpectedly. There are a few issues I make particular note of as I begin my tenure: first and foremost, we are understaffed, and shall have to remain so until the next shipment of prisoners arrives. I am confident we shall be able to manage our current population until then, for we have done so already for a few months now. They do not seem in the spirit to revolt, and escape would be futile: no dwarf could hope to cross this accursed country on their own.

Without a doubt there is an evil presence over this land, though the exact nature of the dark forces at work here remains unknown. Which is a problem. My dear friend, our poor, poor Captain, has been haunting us, yet we do not know where, if anywhere it would be safe to put him to rest. It pains me to think of some curse from the soil turning his body against us. But, for this problem as well, we can only wait and see.

Today I am helping to flatten part of the ground near our entrance, as Pkop had previously designated. We still do this work on our own, for we have not yet the strength to entrust our prisoners with pickaxes. This work will likely take a week or more, out in the unnatural bloody rain while our charges remain holed up underground. How ironic.

Granite 8th, 1051

The designated digging is complete, though we will need to dig further if we truly wish to prevent anyone from climbing to our entrance from that side. For now, we can return to clearing the items from the destroyed trade depot. I hope we can finish that and rebuild it before the next supply caravan.

Granite 15th, 1051

Unbelievable. We can clear a hillside in a week but not a trade depot. An elven caravan has arrived, bearing not much of use but establishing a supply line with them may prove useful. Hopefully the merchants will stick around long enough for us to throw up a temporary one, gods knows we need some more flux. It's not like they have anywhere else to go with those goods, after coming all the way out here...

Granite 23rd, 1051

Before I set out to work on the digging this morning I noticed a couple of our prisoners not doing their appointed work. They complained that they were on their "two-week break" but I reminded them of our policy towards idleness and disobedience. Work on the digging is hampered by our lack of a woodcutter to fell these trees in the way. I could have sworn we had someone for this...

The damn Depot's still cluttered, and the elves are still camped out there (they really do have nowhere else to go with their goods, do they?) We simply don't have the dwarfpower to spare for hauling at the moment, especially considering most of us guards are busy digging.

Slate 1st, 1051

Pkop gave birth to a little girl today, and her husband, Nil, couldn't be happier. It certainly is an odd decision to keep her family out here, but I think the poor dwarf has no means to support them at home. This reminds me of Nil's accomodations: so far he has been sleeping among and working with the Prisoners, but this is improper. We shall have to work on training him so we can house him over here with the rest of his family, yet at the moment, as one of our few masons he is indispensable.

There's the first month. Pisskop, watcha want to name your newest kid?

Slate 1st, 1051

...however, Alath, and her new sister, Bubba, are fortunately staying with their mother in the guard barracks. We'll work on getting everyone in here.

Slate 3rd, 1051

We've completed our temporary detail, yet the Elves refuse to approach, just sitting camped out there.

Slate 8th, 1051

Considering the tragedies we've had so far (though we cannot recover the bodies), I've decided to prepare for the inevitable and have ordered a mausoleum constructed where we may safely store our dead. The evil over this place, mercifully, does not seem the kind to raise them. We've already laid some of the walls, but before we can make any real progress, whoever is responsible for felling trees must be found.

Slate 19th, 1051

The elves unloaded, but we were far to busy to trade. Now they have loaded and left.

For a fortnight now I am frustrated by the lack of progress with these damn trees. Perhaps it is better we did not cut them down in front of the elves, though.

Slate 22nd, 1051

I may find nature somewhat disturbing, but it is less so than the constant rains of blood and the foul-smelling mud they make as they dissolve into the soil. The flowers have begun to bloom on the trees today, and for once I am glad to see them.

Zanzetkuken's ghost continues to haunt us, as does that of the prisoner we lost last year setting up the irrigation. I have ordered tombstones carved for them, perhaps these shall put their spirits to rest. I only wish I could give my friend a more fitting memorial, but this will have to do for now.

I've ordered Atis to take up woodcutting duty. He promptly went to retrieve an axe and somehow became stuck in the cavern lake. He's trying to climb out, if he doesn't soon I shall send help.

Slate 28th, 1051

The next shipment of prisoners arrived today, and gods damn, it's a big one. 23 new bodies; 5 prisoners and an escort of 18 guards. That brings us up to quota. Most of these guards seem fairly green, and some of them may have been civilian laborers who we drafted to make quota, but we shall train them up.

I have organized 2 new squads, one with a full 10 dwarves and assorted melee weapons, once we can acquire some more, the other I have added or transferred our most skilled marksdwarves to, numbering 3.

Felsite 5th, 1051

Asmel, a glassmaking prisoner, fell into a fit of despair when forced to work outside in the blood rain. The prison is serving well, but I'll have to have him calmed down before he hurts himself or disrupts work.

I return to my journal at day's end to report several of the prisoners, new and old, are traumatized at their first stint outdoors.

Felsite 7th, 1051

Keas are stealing the items from the ruins of the former Depot. Including a few quite valuable ones, such as steel bolts and an iridium sword. Something must be done about this...

Felsite 16th, 1051

Our dear captain has finally been put to rest! I only hope one day to give him a more fitting memorial.

In other news, the prisoners continue to be traumatized by blood rain, but they are getting work done. One of our new boys in the guard is getting those trees finally cut down.

Felsite 24th, 1051

Inod's Beard! It has come to my attention that we are without a still. This is a prison, not an extermination camp! We need these sods to work! Not to mention us watch over them. I have ordered the situation rectified immediately. We've a scant 5 barrels left, with luck we can fix this before the shortage sets in. I swear, there is no faster route to a mutiny...

Hematite 1st, 1051

Summer has begun, though I can scarcely tell at this point. Should things heat up, though, we shall have drinks aplenty quite soon: the prisoners are working the still as I write.
