Finally managed to make a profit in a year 1750 start. Had to make a map which was big, full of water and quite a bit of industry. Found a chain which was all reasonably close to water and set up a purely naval trade route. It will take ages to pay back the terraforming I needed for one of the docks, but money is increasing!

edit: at which year do train signs become available?

Can you explain how to use them?  I've tried everything, and my trucks only seem interested in one platform ever...

Place them one tile before the road splits into the different platforms. They are one way, click on them with the sign tool to change orientation. In pak128-Britain.ex, they seem to need to be on the right hand side of the road despite that vehicles in that pak driving on the left. That might be a graphical error.

I have a problem with this, which I downloaded yesterday. On start it gives me an error saying the MSVCP110.dll is missing. I had a copy of that .dll elsewhere on my computer(with Toribash, actually), and I put it right in the executable directory, but it still gives me the error.

Additionally, I had an older version that I moved the pak128-Britain stuff from the above version(the readme said it was compatible with this version), and it gives me an error when loading the content about not being able to handle a certain function, then crashes.

MSVCR110.dll is a part of the microsoft visual c++ redistributable , not sure which exact version of it, but look on google should tell which version you'll need to download from microsoft for this one.
Make sure you get Simutrans from the official website in order to avoid some custom build that may miss something.

For the pakset, make sure the pakset is corresponding to the version of Simutrans you downloaded, the pakset for Simutrans 112.3 (latest stable version) is not the same as the pakset for Simutrans experimental version.

After swimming in money in pak64 with my company owning a lot of transport industry, i decided to give another try in pak128

I started with the usual coal -> power station chain , as it's a basic one that usually deliver profit, though much less in pak128 but still i always had profit with it.

I linked 2 coal mines to the power station to improve the money flow, and that was it, i was making profits but i had to wait a  couple of year in order to afford doing something else.
Finally when the money was in, i started to link a 3rd coal mine so i would get electricity constantly instead of a few days by month without.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It works good, well good for pak128, as my 3 trains are making between 2000 and 3500 profits by month.

But it will take another couple of years in order to afford investing in something else.

The difference in profit for a 3 coal trains -> power station between pak64 and pak128 is rather important, see my pak64 version of the 3 coal train profit , it's 10 times of difference (edit : well, i don't have the same amount of cars too in the trains, only 8 cars by trains in my pak128 current network) !

Might have fixed it be simply downloading the whole damn thing back to my netbook(which runs correctly). The one that gave me the MSVCP110.dll error was an experimental version. ...I missed the link to the main site in the first post. >_<

Going broke on pak128, is is just the learning curve expressing itself. I took a fairly long break from the game, and recently got back into it, and I didnt have much trouble getting past the early game, and there was multiple moments where I had my first industry loop running, and completely forgot about it.

As far as Passengers go. Thats where the real money is. It does require the most time and money.  Now, you have to remember that every Package, has a Destination. And these are generate independently from your network.

So the larger your network gets, the more passenger traffic it will attract. Don't undervalue small towns either. Connect them all. And just ignore mail, until you have like every fucking town connected.

I do admit, that when getting started it does take me forever to find an idea industry chain. It has to be all somewhat close. As far as end chain consumers, those can be as far away as possible. They don't matter, and wont make you money. But you send product to everyone of those, to keep the other chains going.

I almost always go for steel or a coal power plant.

To my understanding, all the industry chains make money.

Also, tadpoles.

Well, I learned that transporting people in pak 128 is REALLY REALLY hard.  I *ALMOST* made a profit, but then I went crazy on buses in this one city.  Well, I'm an idiot.  I should stick to smaller towns at first, but I'm going to find that huge town.  Meh.  I'll lower the population.
