Public service charging tolls for roads would be brutal.  :o
But...  they should balance their budget too!
They get into debt by the millions and billions, with no income whatsoever.

(Made profits with 10%5%(fixed) tolls, at least with road vehicles filling most of its cargo.  But then, I was running 500 maintenance and the maintenance for buildings still took a good chunk...  Made money hand over fist with the rail network though.  But I built em myself.)

EDIT: Ok.... so tried 25% tolls.  Road maintenance is astronomical.  Tolls do not cover it, ever.  The company road based profits, do not stand a chance of covering it either.  They struggle to cover the cost of the road stops too, along with the tolls.
Rails, the 60 mph still makes money no problem, for both parties.  (Cost of station is covered by the company.  That is the significant chunk.)  But those rails are damned cheap and still have a reasonable speed in relation to whatever I bring out.  It may not be profitable for the public service if I use the more expensive rails...  The cheap 30 mph roads didn't make enough money either, but maybe I was shipping the wrong product by it.

I tried starting a timeline game in 1750, or whatever the earliest year was.

"Public Service" is paid by taxes, which are unfortunately not represented on the chart.

Public Service also gets so indebted so quickly because they build all the roads in the game.

Thankfully, they can never go bankrupt and are free to spend in deficit.

Tried another attempt at 1750. Wow, I could not make much profit, the roads were so choked with horse carriages. Ships made a profit, but still not much.

Just like a real government! :D

So, does anyone know whether the download of the current stable edition creates factories with population growth?  I don't really want to public utility those in if I can avoid it with bus lines.

I'm on the 120.0 r7175 they have on the link.

I think connecting factories to public transit etc only enables factory output growth. New factories appeared in my last game a few weeks ago with out connecting existing ones to the passenger network.

Factory output increases with passengers, mail, and power.

More factories come from towns growing, which happens when you create passenger [and mail?] lines between them.

And don't bother with passenger until you have one or two industry chains making money. Passenger don't make money until you have a fairly extensive network.

Just quit a game after grabbing over 2 mil in net worth, so I'm feeling good. Though, the funny thing was I wasn't out of the red yet, since I spent a TON of money getting my car production up to scratch (Though I estimate it would have only taken 5 more years until I was in the black)

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

That's how it goes mostly. Operating in debt for a looong while.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Cars are a good long chain to get going.

I generally slack off, and find myself a coal mine and power plant run to make money. Then I try to move over to steel.

I've found that moving passengers isn't a bad opening business model as long as you can move a lot of them a long distance at a decent pace. Trains are pretty good for this. Planes are... not, unless you're lucky enough to have at least two large, well-spaced cities starting out.

As for horse-and-buggy, intra-city buses are basically the only way to even remotely get close to making money unless you're lucky enough to have a coal mine within walking distance of a power plant.

I've never gotten planes to be profitable.

Everytime I link up coal to a power plant and then transformer back to the coal I always end up losing money. I seriously am confused on what to do or how to advance.

How do you power cities?
