Quite possibly a stupid question, farming and channels
« on: September 22, 2006, 12:14:00 am »

Here is my setup.

code:

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
FU               #               U
U PPPPPPPPPP ##D#D## PPPPPPPPPP U
U PPPPPPPPPP ## # ## PPPPPPPPPP U
U PPPPPPPPPP o# # ## PPPPPPPPPP U
U PPPPPPPPPP  D # D  PPPPPPPPPP U
UFPPPPPPPPPP### # ###PPPPPPPPPPFU

Uu are channels, F is a floodgate, D door etc... The lowercase u there, can I set it as a pond so my dorfs can walk up to the farms I plan to build above that connecting channel, and still have the farms on the right hand side flood?

if i were you, i'll just merge the 2 rooms and make 1 single room where you can put both farms

of course you'll have to leave some tiles unmined to prevent collapse..

no idea about ponds.. what do they do anyway?

----
funny how i was planning 1 huge room and forgot to leave the unmined tiles and had to put in supports.. ruining the whole thing a bit. (well.. it just means i'll have to make smaller but more farm plots)

I prefer to keep them seperate, so I can flood each room as I want.

To answer my own question, no. Apparently once a channel or a pond is connected to a floodgate, it is a channel.

I have yet to see the value in compartmentalizing farm plots.  Maybe two huge farms flanking a food storage area, but that's it.  Even if you don't use all the space for farming, you might harvest some quarry bushes.

Miners get so good so fast, it's easy to carve out huge areas.  Just leave a square unmined every 7 spaces.
