On an unrelated note the last time I was making a character and ended up with this one I wanted to take a class that allowed telepathy since I thought it would be interesting. But apparently there was a change or something and it appears that telepathy allows pokemon and trainers to communicate no matter what. I thought it was odd but and I may have read it wrong but, eh.

Born into Muse region itself, Thomas began life on a small rural community. Noted as being restless and rather inquisitive in regards to the wilderness, around the age of eleven he started to routinely leave the town to wander around the wilderness surrounding it to the dismay of his family who learnt that he had been skipping a few classes from school in order to indulge his hobby.

At age 16, his relationship with his family started to break down over the constant trips he'd make, soon culminating in him leaving his home for the wilds. From there, Thomas would wander across the whole region, prowling the plains and lurking through the lush jungles as easily as most people comfortably live in a city.

In one of his urban sojourns, Thomas spotted the posters advertising a promotional video for the region. Curious about it, along with needing the money the sign-up bonus had and presuming that any group that wanted to film anywhere outside the towns of the region would need someone to show them around, thus did Thomas apply to join the crew for the video.

In regards to his Abra, Kolya, Thomas speaks little about, only acknowledging that he met the abra after he had left home. Kolya also rebuffs any attempts to pry into the pair's history, typically by pelting the questioner with various things like pebbles, seeds and other objects.

I really want to give PTU a try so I'm trying to make a character, but I ran into a bit of trouble. So are edges basically like Skill Points? I use one to advance a skill rank? If I start with the super nerd background and use 3 edge points on skills would they look like this?

Also, kinda of a build question. I know next to nothing about this system, but if I wanted to make a character focused on making things that augment his Pokemon abilities (Think Mewtwo's Armor, but that's probably a very high-level example), would high Mind with a tech focused skill layout be the way to go?

Edit-After a cursory scan of the Tech PDF. I think Medicine would serve me better than Occult(Original Concept was eventual Psychic, but then I read that psychic stuff was spirit, not mind). I intend to be the party Bookworm/Abrasive Nerd/Medic. Would that be a good starting character for PTU?
Back to the drawing board, now that I've looked through some features and I'm not sure if the system supports this kinda thing. I think I might go with Mastermind.

Edges can be used ether to buy skill edges, which upgrade your skills as described, or they can be used to buy other types of edges, which are sorta like miniature features in some ways, and typically give a small bonus to something or allow you to do something. Your example is correct (as far as I am aware, I haven't like, double checked every single skill, but nothing stands out as odd) although since we are level three, you do get five edges instead of three. 3 starting edges, a edge gained at level 2, and then a bonus edge that can only be used to bring a skill to novice or lower at level 2.

Also if you wanted to make techy upgrades for pokemon, there is the Upgrader class, who is specialized in creating bionic upgrades. However, he's from the scifi book, and thus maybe not applicable to this particular game... Researchers, who are in this game, can make some held items to upgrade pokemon a bit, and you might (if the GM is okay with it) be able to refluff them into battle augmentation suit thingys, but they are quite limited...

Edges can be used to raise up skills, like you have with Edu. Tech and Edu. Medicine, but they can also be used to add a few minor abilities as well. Startings on page 38-43, there are a list of Edges that can "purchase", instead of just getting stats.

Well, I figure I better start working on a sheet eventually. So here is the start of mine. I'm using Apparently google drive is having issues and I can't unlock my sheet. (very) brief concept/backstory: Muse-based apprentice to one of the local priests/priestesses, super into native traditions (so far as those native traditions involve getting drunk and partying with the spirits), joins the party as a spot of local color and to hopefully keep them from getting killed because medic. Super laid back but still kinda creepy.

Here is my Sheet

Mechanically, the basic concept is to provide debuf support as a Roughneck, as well as some passable damage with slash once the character gets a sword or knife. The character is primed to move into either mentor or a pure combat class (Weapon Specialist if allowed or Martial Artist otherwise) depending on party need.

The Inkay can provide support with reflect, a huge attack with STAB foul play. With its contrary ability, Inkay can be supported by the debuff moves of its trainer and other party members.

I have taken the liberty of writing up two backgrounds for this character, one as a local and one as a traveler, so that the GM has greater flexibility when trying to fit me into this game.

Franklin 'Frank Talk' Ziti (Forigen Trainer)

Gender: Male
Home Region: Johto

Background: Franklin was born to a loving lower middle class family in Goldenrod City, and was seen as a kid with great potential by most of the adults in his life. He did well enough in school; What he lacked in raw intellect he more than made up for in class with his work effort, (and in the case of that one impossible physics class, cheating), and his skill as a fencer, wrestler, and lacrosse player got him into college on a sports scholarship.

At school in Kanto's Saffron City, however, Franklin began to fall in with the wrong crowd. His grades began to slip, and halfway through his sophomore year he was expelled after it was found that he was involved in a plot to steal Pokemon from the university's psionic research lab. Out of school and disgraced, Franklin and his friends drifted for a few months, sustaining themselves on petty crime, before they were eventually recruited by Team Rocket.

Franklin's role on the team was that of goon; Many people would simply hand over their Pokemon and valuables without a fight when the large and frightening rocket operative demanded them to do so. When his victims did decide to defend themselves, Franklin proved that he was no slouch with a blade either. Franklin also proved himself useful to Team Rocket as an interrogator; Although he was a terrible liar, he was good at spotting lies, and when this skill was coupled with his ability to threaten and inflict injury, he could usually get the truth out of his subject. His skills in this area earned Franklin the street name 'Frank Talk'.

'Frank Talk' ran with Team Rocket for the better part of a decade, surviving their fall in the Kanto region, and helping them become established in his homeland of Johto. Eventually, however, Franklin was captured, but luckily for him, although he was a Rocket Admin of some influence at the time, the police had little evidence against him, and all he could be convicted of was a single count of Pokemon Theft that carried a sentence of no more than several years in jail.

Franklin turned out to be a model prisoner. He followed the rules, played sports, participated in prison battle tournaments with Rental Pokemon, and even finished up his college degree in communications. His willingness to behave and stay out of trouble, however, made him less than popular with other former rocket members and the various prison gangs housed in the facility; By the time he got out, Franklin had enough enemies with friends on the outside, that he felt it wise to leave Johto, at least for a time - it was at this point he encountered the opportunity to visit the Muse Region, and figuring that a communications degree would be enough to give him a shot at landing the gig. Taking with him only an Inkay he met as part of a prison program to rehabilitate abused Pokemon, he filled out the application...

Personality and Goals: Franklin usually comes across as soft-spoken and perhaps even a bit wise, but he can go from zero to scary and cruel in the blink of an eye. He is quick to make friends with those he works with, and quick to take extreme and violent measures to help his friends meet their goals. He rationalizes his bad behavior as 'just business' or 'looking out for his buddies', and, when actively involved in brutality or criminality on a regular basis, is prone to doing good deeds and making charitable contributions to 'balance his karma'.

Franklin is still trying to figure out what his future holds, an will likely jump at and cling onto any chance he sees to establish himself in some way. He can see himself going legit as a Pokemon Trainer or documentary film maker, but could also see himself returning to a life of crime if he finds a suitable organization in need of his services.

Tausa’afia Joy (Local Trainer)

Gender: Female
Home Region: Muse

Background: Tausa’afia, or Afia for short, was the result of a one night stand between a Nurse Joy who had recently opened a Pokemon Center in the Muse Region and a local man. As she had an absent father and a well connected, good hearted, but ultimately far too busy mother, there was nobody around to teach the young girl respect or self control. This lead to trouble.

Nurse Joy found herself moving her daughter from school to school, as the girl had a nasty habit of starting fights and either getting kicked out or making too many enemies to stay. It only grew worse as Afia grew older, and started bringing knives to campus, which she would sometimes even use on classmates. At first, Nurse Joy allowed her daughter to suffer the consequences, and Afia spent some time in Juvie, but this was unproductive; Juvie only served to introduce the girl to several nasty people with whom she would start to hang out, and had no corrective effect on her behavior. Giving up, Nurse joy changed tactics, and moving forward used her many powerful connections in town to protect her daughter from the legal fallout of her actions.

Puberty, of course, only made Afia's behavior worse. She became more mobile and independent, dropped out of school completely, and starting making trouble in towns and villages in which Nurse Joy held no real influence; thus spending more time in Juvie, and even adult jail in the settlements too small to have a separate facility for minors. As her circle of shady friends grew from these visits to incarcerationland, Afia began dating. She swiftly moved through a long list of romantic relationships, and seemed to be doing so, at least in part, so for the opportunities to be violent that exist when a relationship ends or goes bad.

Recently, on an angry whim, Afia managed to steal an Inkay from a rather frightened ex. Up until that point, she had been avoiding Pokemon Ownership for the simple reason that owning a Pokemon would mean that she would have to inevitably visit the Pokemon Center and deal with her mother, but once the Pokeball was in her hands, Afia found it impossible to resist the urge to use it in battle. Although she found that she was a decent enough combatant in a fair fight, Afia much preferred the sort of brawl in which she could fight alongside her Pokemon.

Nurse Joy, of course, was quick to discover that her daughter had picked up Pokemon Battling, and was quicker still to take advantage of the situation. She knew that the league was sending some trainers to the region to film a video, so she used her influence with the Pokemon League offices to have her daughter placed as their guide. Nurse Joy's hope being that among the foreign trainers, one or more will prove capable of controlling her daughter, or serving the girl as a good role model.

Personality and Goals: Afia is usually brash, straightforward, and direct. She has no qualms about telling somebody what she wants out of them, (usually violence and/or intimacy), and has little patience for liars or people who try to change the subject on her. She can appear and act quite normal, perhaps even pleasant, for extended periods of time, but her bad habits and reputation mean that the few friends she has are either very forgiving or tough enough to put up with her. She is, however, willing to do almost anything for those who earn her trust and prove willing to hang around in spite of her frequent outbursts.

Afia lacks to foresight to have any sort of long term goal, but will be quick to latch on to any objective which can be met with violence, or which rebels against authority. Rebel Movements, Pokemon Leagues, Underground Fight Rings, missions to beat up or kill somebody, and the goals of her few friends will appeal to her greatly. Her personality and outlook may be changed by extended interaction with a more grounded character.

Alright, I finished my character sheet and backstory (and ran that sucker though a spell checker) and solved the issue I had before. It should be viewable here. (Although I might also make one in the style that Weirdsounds and powder miner are using, since it seems cleaner and to be honest the automatic calculations of a spread sheet are not so useful when it's a version out of date and I have a lot of buffs that are not taken into account...)

Edit: Dang. My back story is not readable on that sheet, since it's too large. I'll trim out the extraneous parts later probably. Until then, here it is.

Backstory/Origin: Lina was born to a rich family in the Unova region. Although she grew up in a highly privileged environment, her life was strictly controlled and sheltered by her parents who expected her to grow up to be their perfectly behaved and cultured daughter. She was rarely allowed outside of the wall that surrounded the mansion grounds, and almost never interacted with other children of her age. She became lonely, eventually trying to run away from home several times, although each time being caught and returned for a lengthy period of confinement to her rooms. Eventually she became depressed, and her studies and health declined. Her parents, searching for a solution, decided that the companionship and responsibility of owning a pokemon would be able to revive her, although she was utterly uninterested in the more normal pet pokemon that were presented to her, she managed to find a infant magby, who she was fascinated with. Her parents were greatly reluctant to allow her to own such a potentially dangerous pokemon, but in the end they relented to her pleas and the hope that this would bring her back on track towards their vision of her. Although there were a sharp increase in the number of minor fires started on the grounds, her grades and general health both greatly increased and energies that previously went towards mischief and escape attempts now were funneled towards playing with and raising her Magby, which she named Johan.

As she grew older her parents decided that it was no longer in her best interests to home school her, and instead enrolled her in a academy for young women she. This would perhaps prove later to be a mistake. Although her life was still somewhat controlled by her parents, by necessity she found herself enjoying more freedom then ever before and with greater experience in the outside world she became more outgoing and confident then ever before. Although she never became close friends with anyone, she found that she was generally well like, or at least respected, by most. Although school was easy at first from her intelligence alone, she found school boring, and slowly her grades fell and she failed to pay attention to and sometimes skipped out entirely on her classes. Her parents, in a effort to reverse this trend, placed more restrictions on her life, forcing her to study longer and come home earlier. She chaffed under these restrictions, and her behavior only became worse with time. Her parents tried placing even more restrictions and punishments on her for this, which in turn caused her to lash out more. Delinquency, drug use, theft, and vandalism. It eventually came to a head after a number of months by a series of fires striking across town. Although officially the culprit was never found, Lana was confined indefinitely to her rooms and Johan was taken away and restrained within a specialized fire proof pokemon pen. This proved to be insufficient, and a huge fire (evidence points towards it starting in the wing that Linas rooms were in) started in the mansion. In the confusion Lina escaped and freed Johan, with nothing but her clothing and a small amount of pocket money.

Lina joined the Muse documentary for two reasons, the first being that she has a insatiable curiosity for the world and wants to explore more of it, and this seems like a good way to do that. The second because the money she took with her only lasted a few months and is now running out, and is hoping that this will lead to some type of opportunity to make some cash, or at least that the documentary will pay her living expenses for a while.

Kyle is a kid from Hoenn. That's it. He's not all that unique. His parents ran the pokemart and he has a few friends being from one of the smaller areas. He baby sat for the neighbors since he likes kids. And once he beat up a poacher... Okay, maybe not all that average. Anyways, so the story is like this, Kyle is walking through the woods one day when he sees a small form bolt out of the foliage, now normally one would just keep walking by since it's fairly normal. Not Kyle. Kyle checks the time and after quickly deciding he has the time decides to go see what the little pokemon was running from. He moves through the forest following the broken sticks and ruffled leaves for a while before bumping into a man who was obviously not doing legal things. The man reached for his pokeball but Kyle wasn't having and of that shit and kneed him in the balls before unleashing the full extent of what he learned from his martial arts teacher and punching the man with a hit that may have been able to break a (weak) rock. Needless to say the man was knocked out cold and had a shattered jaw which allowed ample time for Kyle to call the police. As he was waiting a Ralts walked up to him and stood by him looking at the unconscious poacher. This struck Kyle as odd but other wise he did react. When officer Jenny got there and got his report he was about to leave when there was a tugging on his pants leg. Kyle looked down to see the ralts holding a pokeball she must have stolen off the poacher. Kyle took it and looked between her and the ball for a second before the ralts took the initiative and pushed the button. Kyle was of course shocked and slightly confused but decided that he should probably get down to the pokemon center to get his new pokemon a check up. And that's the story of how Kyle met Satori.
