So basically it's a Postal 1 remake?

Seems to be amusingly violent, I think I'll check this one out, see how over the top it goes.

Watching the trailer again, I think it's possible to condense the reasons why I don't like it into two points.

1. The opening narration sounds like middle schooler emo prose, and is obnoxious on those grounds. If the game isn't being played completely straight, then the fact that it isn't might be lost on that audience.

2. The trailer seems to be deliberately (or maybe accidentally, it's a remote possibility) linking itself to all the mass shootings we see here in Freedomland and occasionally elsewhere, when I actually don't think the game is going to be about that, and could just be drawing a misleading connection for the sake of publicity and edginess.

There's another major one that some people also find offensive, but that doesn't affect me personally:

3. The violence depicted is graphic, sadistic, and personal enough that the game is genuinely disturbing, with no clear message or intelligence about it to justify it (unlike other games that try similar things, somewhat like Spec Ops: The Line).

Both 1 and 2 could be fixed if the trailer didn't have any narration, and was just that gameplay footage. All three will probably be more or less resolved when more information is released. To elaborate on 2, judging from the aesthetic and minor things like how people are just milling around outside the building the character starts in, I don't think the world this game is taking place in is supposed to be like reality. So while the first reaction of viewing the trailer is to link it to mass shootings, it doesn't seem like that's actually what the game will be about. Obviously it's still a game where you shoot lots of unarmed people, but reasons for doing so and the world that it's happening in are likely to be different enough that it's not a clean analogy. It's just that with only that dumb narration and the following gameplay, there isn't enough information in the trailer to make that obvious. I could be wrong, but I'm anticipating that the world will be a dystopian exaggeration of things many people (including those who actually go on these shootings) find wrong with it, with the principle conflict being what happens when the player thinks "He has a point..." after getting more background on the world. But that's just speculation in the vacuum of more information.

Also, on the topic of the developer controversy.

My ultimate question to people that don't like it...Why are you here then?

Not that you aren't allowed to post on this thread or anything...it just confuses me. It's like comments on youtube music videos "This band sucks!"..."Then why are you watching the video?"

You blatently state you do not like it but you continue to push that point...as if you are on a crusade to change minds or something

I don't know about everyone else, but I came here with no prior knowledge, and the OP did, explicitly, ask 'what do you think?'. So...

What sentiment.  The tittle clearly drew them in, and the conversation made them stay or comment..  This is nothing like youtubery, but even that has the same affliction.

The "why are you here then?"-thing is as nonsensical here as it is on Youtube. Sure, if someone exclusively clicks on content he knows he will hate, and then tells everyone how much he hates it, it's simply spam.

But people arguing over the actual thing, and debating the + and - is an entirely different story. If you have something against that, you might as well remove the whole "like and dislike" bar from Youtube, because you're not allowed to critique something anymore. It's the typical Fanboy-argument of "Stop disliking what I like."

I went back to Hotline Miami to see if it's the actual violence turning me off. But I think it's the presentation. Hatred just seems like "Murderporn". It's basically the gaming varaint of a snuff-movie. Again, I wont mind if it gets banned, but I probably will not care if it gets released either way. One look at the footage they provided is enough to tell that it's gonna be a mindless piece of junk even if you disregard the theme. So it's prolly gonna be shot down either way.

I would not want to see it banned, but I probably would not play it. It is, and pardon the meme, 2edgy4me.

Didn't see the video, don't care.  It's a shooter, not getting it.  I don't like shooters unless they are made to make me laugh/feel good inside, and the trailer gave me a headache on the level of which the Tony Hawk games did.

On a related note, you can argue that people don't like pretense all you want, but I think that is dumb.  Some people will appreciate the nihilism, but generally, I don't think those people play video games, but in the case it does sell, meh.  I do appreciate the trailer's ability to give me a headache though.  That guy does look like an emo-vampire, and that annoys me.  If the game is trying to be extremely realistic, don't use cartoony looking characters.  But yeah, I haven't had so bad a headache since playing Tony Hawk Underground 2.  I puked once watching my brother play that game.  It was horrible.

I'm surprised this wasn't done right after GTA. Guess better late than never.

I thought GTA was shit, but main reason it did so well...the news media (fox, cnn, australia news etc) went crazy over GTA. I'm pretty sure that pretty much helped GTA with its success.

If they succeed, I give them a round of applause. I love it when games piss off the corrupt fake exaggerated news media :D

Will I play it? NOPE. It looks like shit like GTA and other similar games.

I had to pause the video after the first line of the monologue because I was coughing up my drink. I wasn't expecting to laugh at the trailer.

In this game, people seem to run, hide, scream, and beg for mercy. You can hear cops begging for backup on the radio, their voices shaky and cracking. It's not just about the ultra-nihilistic bullshit the character spouts. It's about the disturbing level of realistic detail put into the characters you're supposed to be killing en-masse.
I think this has just sold the game for me...  At least I'll give it a good try.

... I've been meaning to remember to watch that trailer on the first page.
