Oi, that was a weird trailer.

Goons we kill in other games are usually faceless mooks. People who we run over in GTA without a thought are just that, people who exist to get run over. They don't have a personality, a history, and we don't know anything about them. There isn't a special animation to kill civilians, we just shoot them the same way we shoot bad guys. And the protagonist is usually fighting a big bad so massacring some innocents here and there doesn't stir his image anyway. Games where the protagonist is clearly evil and the antagonist isn't really evil is usually humorous, like Overlord.

I'm not defending this game or anything. But if we take out the context of "I'm fighting a big bad so it's ok to kill innocent civilians when I'm free roaming" out from these games, we are not really doing anything different. Games just emphasize the point of antagonist being the biggest bad and protagonist being the guy to stop him. This game seems to emphasize the opposite, I suppose. I say don't give a shit about what anybody emphasizes.

I'm surprised this wasn't done right after GTA. Guess better late than never.

I thought GTA was shit, but main reason it did so well...the news media (fox, cnn, australia news etc) went crazy over GTA. I'm pretty sure that pretty much helped GTA with its success.

If they succeed, I give them a round of applause. I love it when games piss off the corrupt fake exaggerated news media :D

Will I play it? NOPE. It looks like shit like GTA and other similar games.
GTA really isn't shit. And it's certainly not played as straight as this game is. Most criticism on GTA IV was about it being too serious.

GTA was popular because it was one of the first real modern open world games.  GTA 3 that is.  And yeah, the big problem with GTA 4 is that its storyline is so serious it's jarring next to the gameplay.  You're dating a girl who's secretly an undercover cop trying to get you to incriminate your boss and meanwhile you've killed a thousand people and been arrested fifteen or sixteen times.

You've got 60,000 dollars in cash on hand and you're still playing the mook for neighborhood-level bosses.

That's why I like Saints Row more.  The story is as ridiculous as the gameplay.

Also I dunno how bad the older games were about this but 4 and 5 are packed to fucking bursting with bullshit "content" that mostly just serves to take up time and space.

Nico my caahsin let's go bowling! and such.

"G.T.A 1" had you as a hitman for hire doing odd jobs for mobs and gangs. Things like blow up this car, shoot this guy, blow up this building, collect these phone calls to find the location of a stash. Most of the character was delivered by your employers and the missions were unnecessary to advancing the game since the overall goal was to own a specific amount of money for the entire level.
There were odd job stuff scattered around, like delivering cars to a barge for reselling or blowing up cars with R.C car bombs, to gain a bit of extra money for variety.

I remember GTA 2. The purpose was again having a specific amount of cash to move to the next city. You could get that money without doing missions, since killing peds and blowing cars up would give you money. There were 3 tiers of missions: green, yellow, red. If you had enough respect from a criminal organization, they would give you harder missions.

That seems more complicated then GTA nowadays.
Now I'm imagining a spiritual successor of GTA 1/2. Open-world Hotline Miami? Yes please.

I love how they're making a game just to piss people off.

Also, the engine looks lovely. That destruction is very nicely done.

This is the most juvenile thing I have ever seen in my life, and that would be the only reaction to this game if the media had any sense of what deserved attention and what didn't.

Hahaha!  I think if I were the director I would've just had him look at the dude, then push the button and blow the building up.  But those are the kinds of endings I like.

Regardless, i'm still pretty excite for this game.  I still think it's doing the same shit we've been doing for years and just not bothering to abstract it out.  I still think you guys are focusing too much on the goofy intro scene.

So.. Its like postal but with better visuals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxgoLk2NCh4

Please. That is an insult to POSTAL. At least THAT game had some kind of sense of humor and self-awareness. This thing is not even a game, it's the computer equivalent of CRAAAAAAAWLIIIIING IN MY SKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!

It's basically porn for people who get off on being 6edgy

Not sure how Postal 1 was self-aware or really sort of humorous, what with the guy being inflicted by a madness in his head constantly pushing him to kill.

There was self-aware stuff in Postal 2 about the lack of plot in Postal 1. Like one of the graves in the cemetary says something like "RIP Postal 1 Plot"

As for  Hatred it seems derivative. The logo looks like a recolor of the Doom logo, and while I can't tell whether the protagonist's nihilistic speech reads more like something that would be said by Rorschach, Sweeny Todd, the Crimson Executioner, or a throwaway character from Metalocalypse it definitely doesn't sound like something sa9d  by a character whose m0de of speech is clearly distinct from one of those three.

EDIT:
On second thought, he also kind of sounds like the villain from Fallout: Lonesome Road
