... and... suggestions on similar political-intrigue ridden novels?

I Cladius = Historical drama
Dune = Science Fiction
Game of Thrones = Fantasy

They are not of one genre. If the content focusses on intrigues and political allies and enemies depends on the author, not the genre.

SORT of in the same vein, maybe Ian Banks Culture stuff?  CJ Cherryh - I'm thinking Cyteen & the Company Wars books, maybe Chanur.  Bujold's Vorkosigan stuff?   Dan Simmon's Hyperion?

Dune is pretty much a Space Opera, and there are lots of those if you want more. Legend of the Galactic Heroes has a written form, though I prefer the anime adaptation. The Foundation series by Asimov is also very-far-future science fiction in space, and very very good. Haven't read I, Claudius. Game of Thrones is basically a space opera on land.

Foundation is truly epic. At least the first few books.

Foundation is a great series, and I agree with its recommendation. Also check: Pretty much everything else Isaac Asimov wrote?

Agreed. You really can't go wrong, and almost everything he wrote is part of the same universe, a timeline that spans millenia (similar to the extended Dune series).

Depending on your wants, Neuromancer is pretty good near-future sci-fi with a good dose of business/espionage/quasi-politics.

Everything Asimov made is great apart from the fourth, fifth and sixth Foundation books. (which were made some time after the original three)

Also, if you like Game of Thrones you'll probably also like the Farseer Trilogy, which was so goddamn immersive that I stopped reading it. (I read so I can sleep better, not to lie awake wondering about fictional characters :P)

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Okay, Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation (the two prequels) weren't quite as good, but Foundation and Earth was amazing, especially having read the Caves of Steel (and its sequels, The Naked Sun and Robots of Dawn).

Neuromancer is good, but has nothing to do with what he asked for. There is no political intrigue with different parties and backstabbing. And its rather short.

C'mon dude, spoilers. If we're going to recommend books, we probably shouldn't tell him the plot points of em.
