Thanks to a mod that adds in dinosaurs, my meat farms right now are filled with whatever the plural of saurophaganax is. They're quite good for war, btw.

The weirdest animal I've ever raised for meat was in 34.11, when I had a mountain gnome farm.

Seriously, they have [CAN_LEARN] but not [CAN_SPEAK], and for some reason if it's intelligent but can't talk to you, your dwarves are happy to eat it...

If you'll excuse me, I have some good aligned mountains to find.

They would be pretty easy to catch, too. Cage traps around a barrel of booze. For bonus points, make it a barrel of gnomeblight.

This actually raises an interesting question:  If you tame an animal at an embark (and optionally max out the training knowledge), retire the fort, and embark somewhere else using the same civilization, do those animals become available in caravans?

Has anyone experimented with this at all?

Unless it's changed in the latest release, you never get civ-level domestication.

I was thinking the same thing, since I had a cave dragon farm going. Completely mastered training them, retired, went somewhere else. No cave dragons.  :'(

Aww...
but seriously that would be sweet in preventing sieges, just unleashing some of them on your victims

In one of my earliest forts I purchased a breeding pair of pileated gibbons from the elves. I had the idea that I would give all of my dwarves a pet helper monkey. For, you know, reasons. Then I discovered that the animal cap was significantly lower than the population of an average dwarf fortress. The idea then transformed into pileated gibbon meat roasts, pileated gibbon leather trousers, pileated gibbon skull totems, and pileated gibbon flavored miasma for everyone.

Gnomes are interesting creatures! I once built a gnomish mine and a mine-town.

Those are awesome for meat industry.  Had a set of those a few fortresses ago.  The fact that they inherited their growth from the vermine (born fully grown) makes them ideal for early/rapid meet/bone/leather production.

My most recent fort I've got a breeding pair of veloceraptors thanks to the dinosaur mod. Before anyone says anything, yes they are fully domesticated and are worse than cats.

I briefly had sea otters. I caught a pregnant mother. But someone let the babies out while they were untamed and she's the only one left :( I'm hoping to get a male with my traps to get that going again.

I am still looking to start a giant sperm whale farm, one day...
