Italian Artillery
Though the Wali's specially made ship was quite a spectacle- it was the centrepiece of the year's Carnivale- it was still rudimentary and lacking...It would need some refinements. Thankfully, the first shipments of steel had arrived from Nev and now, the Emirates throughout the nation set their best and brightest towards designing a new ship. While slow and inaccurate, the engineers concluded that the general blueprint was sound. These new ships would have be fitted with better artillery...after they were made. As such, the Emirs decided to begin research for more accurate firing systems and better artillery in general.

Engine Improvements
As a side project, research was begun on better engines for use in all Italian industries. Research however was focused on their use in ships, particularly military vessels...

Rordalian Hostility; Naval Power
News has arrived that the Rordalians wish to colonise the North African coast! Not only are they invading lands of the True Faith, but they dare cross OUR LAKE without OUR express permission! A warning has been sent to the Rordalian embassy. In addition, full-scale construction of the prototype Dandolo-Class Battleship, despite their simplicity, has been ordered to safeguard Mare Nostrum.

Ok, time to make the world map.  I updated the first post with more background information on the state of affairs in your nation.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'll make this more coherent latter.

South America.  Sadly, people are dumb, and someone who was quite dumb thought South America was part of America.  Whoops.  Then a few hundred years latter, people find out.  Ok, it wasn't a hundred years.  More like twenty.  But you know what I mean.

America has been under the rule of various European nations as a part of their colonialism.  The major one was Lyrian's colony.  Since they were so close, they were able to keep other powers from coming across the ocean with their mighty fleet.  Too bad a fleet doesn't help you on land.  When the colonies grew to be about the size of Lyria, they rebelled.  Then all the other colonies followed suit during the 19th century.  The ones directly south of America are technically puppets of America, but the people that live in America don't like dying, so no war has been fought.  All three of the puppets are Italian; it was the Italians who had the idea to sail west to Asia.  They found America.  The nations in South America don't like America's imperialism.  They were all colonized by the other countries in their quest for gold, glory, and to spread their religion a bunch.  The reason why South Americans don't like the North Americans is because they are multicultural, they have various nations.  They coexist even with their differences.  North America is Uni-cultural, and subjugates those who are different.

Oh, and most of the North Americans live in the jungle.  They live mostly off of fish, but out west lies the great plains.  Hunting is a big sport for them, and guns used to be a part of their culture.  As their mass deforestation continues, this is less important.  They are a republic, and elect guys to elect guys to elect guys.

As you can see, the race for Africa never happened.  It has allowed Francia, and Fgerbia to advance to the age of gunpowder.  Maybe it is because of this that there was no gunpowder.  As Italia knows, Francia was able to invade Europe during the beginning of the 19th century.  Sadly, this did not work out for them, and they were pushed back by a coalition of the German States.

Ok.  I'm going to bed.  There is a ton of more regional stuff I need to explain, like the purple areas that Nev is crossing over.  Meh.  I'll do it latter.

Okay then. The Scramble for Africa is happening now. But first, science, Industry and progress.

The Iron Rhine

The self-proclaimed Italian dominance over the Mare Nostrum endangers the free access of the Germanic states to the Sea. It is an opportunity that can not be ignored, as it could greatly expand our influence in mainland Europe, and our Industrial and commercial Prowess. With the threat of Italy cutting of their free access to the Sea upon which they depend, we will offer them the construction of a pan-german railway system, connecting to the Industrial cities and ports of the Lower countries, as well as improving their possibilities to access the sea through the Rhine, and lastly the establishment of the first airship airline in the world.

Cost for this are probably going to be limited, as the advanced German states already have a developed railway network. We merely broker the arrangement and aid sufficiently to extend our influence over them.

Border Defense

Worried by the dramatic increase of Rordalian fortifications near our borders, the low countries have started their own fortification program. Using natural barriers, such as rivers, this line should be able to hold the border against a Rordalian invasion.

Scramble for Africa

Thanks to earlier diplomatic efforts, the lower countries have succeeded where others have failed, which is bringing civilization to Africa. With the original colony now firmly estabilished, it is time to expand. By sending new expeditions to make treaties with local tribal leaders, the lower countries will attempt to rapidly expand it's territory towards the cape.

A Place in the Sun
In response to the indignant letter from the government of Italia, we say this: The idea of the Mediterranean being "your sea", which you have exclusive right to, is a falsehood. We seek not to thrust you into the shade, but we demand our own place in the sun. To this end, Rordalia offers the state of Fgerbia patronage in return for a mutual defensive alliance and the right to build in Fgerbian lands.

Damn the Torpedos!
Rordalia begins research on self-propelled underwater shells, in order to be able to compete against the other powers larger ships, with Rordalia's own, admittedly smaller and weaker ironclads. A thousand ecus will go to the first inventor to come up with a suitable design.

Riding the Iron Horse
In response to the other nations' aggressive industrialization projects, Rordalia begins a network of railroads to connect the irrigation lines and offer faster transport.

lastly, an envoy is sent to the Low Countries, expressing regret over the misunderstanding over the building of fortifications, as they were intended more as a case-study for the planned colonies' fortifications. The envoy also offers that the pan-Germanic railroad be connected to Rordalia's own planned railroad system.

And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the Assaulted Lanterns Magma Artillery' - King Id I of the Assaulted Lanterns

The Lower Countries is willing to allow a connection of the Rordalian Railroad to our railroad network, from where they will have access to the Iron Rhine.

To this end, Rordalia offers the state of Fgerbia patronage in return for a mutual defensive alliance and the right to build in Fgerbian lands.

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the Emir of Florence, are quick to react to the Rordalians. 'We have no problem with your countrymen seeking a sunbath. No, we only deplore that your people require land far from their homes and owned by tribes from before your time to enjoy the sun...". The Emir made no mention of the Italian claim to the sea; he himself had thought the claim pure folly.

Okay then. The Scramble for Africa is happening now. But first, science, Industry and progress.

The Italian embassy had little to say about this so-called Scramble for Africa except encouragement for bringing progress to the tribals but however expressed sadness at the annexation of ancestral land into the colony.

Scandinavia is still in the process of Industrialising, and all income are still being focused on that. Therefore the king has wisefully decided to start reforming the army and fleet instead.

Initiate  "Jägarförbanden"

As warfare is changing, Scandinavia needs to change with it. The imitative of "Jägarförband", improving the already proven light infantry doctrine. These professional soldiers should be the best Scandinavia can offer. Only the brightest, strongest and most level-headed men are able to join. The training shall be harsh, focusing on individual thinking and battling. These soldiers will fight in small groups, working independently from the rest of the army, sometimes behind enemy lines on special missions.

Initiate the Militära underrättelse- och säkerhetstjänsten.(MUST)

Information has always been an important part of war. But in these times, where a single Gatling -gun can kill hundreds of men, the ability to gather information, plant rumours and sabotage the enemy is even more important. To counter this, a department will be assigned to this task and this task only.

Countinue with the industralisation-procsess

All surplus from trade and taxes shall go to industrialising the nation even further.

Nev

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You have created a line of general purpose farming equipment powered by people, seeing as you have not developed any form of engine to do so.  This is very useful for farmers, and mass production is started.  The amount of farmers required in an arbitrary area of farmland goes down, and these people who are unemployed go into the industrial workforce.  Still would be much better if people weren't powering the stuff, and some more reliable method was found.

You found that the farmers have been taking a portion of their food to feed their families.  This is heresy!  We don't have enough food for the industrial workers, who are much more numerous.  Sadly, now the farmers are starving.  This will likely cause people to stop farming and go work in the industries, making the problem worse.  Heavy industrial production is going swimmingly, except for the well known shortages of everything.  People are mad...  I'd start preparing...

Lyrian

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The parallels between this and real life are pretty impressive.  You know why the Russians have had the best ballet?  You take all the people who are good at ice skating and force them to do ice skating their entire life, from birth.  They do not matter as people.

Yours is not that harsh, but still.  The people who are good at learning will be put into the bigger better schools.  I cringe where people would put me, a person who thrives upon individualism and free thought.  I doubt there is a school for that.  A lot of parents are sad for this, and decline the offer of better education due to the fact that they'll have to travel, and the quality of this education is still pretty bad.  Like teaching pretty basic math bad.  Even the selection process is pretty bad.  You gotta account for those people who look dumb but are really surprisingly smart.  The results of this are minimal, but it provides the foundation for something greater.

In other news, people are not traveling to the amusement park city.  Too far out of the way.  I'm not going to spend a week traveling for a day's worth of fun.  A lot of this has to do with the slowness of horse and buggy.  Maybe a railroad would help.

You put out a subsidy for fishing, this does attract more people to fish, but people already were to begin with.  And I'm talking going out on a boat fishing, not just sitting at the dock and throwing a hook and hoping for a catch.  The middle class is getting in on it though, and now it is "in fashion" for people who own a boat to go out and fish for fun, then make a quick buck with the haul.

United Emirates of Italy

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You have designed a new light artillery piece, still direct fire, but now with longer range.  Longer barrel --> more range and better accuracy, but lower muzzle velocity.

You have developed a standardized steam engine.  It is industrial sized, made to be used in larger boats.  This is due to a distinct lack of oil.  Note, you do know of internal combustion, it is simply not used everywhere cause not everywhere has it/is currently using it as a method of power.

Due to the method of the design, it is possible to outfit the boat with the new inventions.  In total, 10 Dandalo A Class gunboats are produced with two 90mm guns, and powered by a steam engine.  Over time, this should increase with continuation of this order.  The more ships you produce, the better you get at making ships.  You might want to develop a better engine though, as your steam engine is inferior to internal combustion power.  Also, you might want to ask Nev for rights to drill oil, as currently while they have oil, it is not being mined.

Low Lands

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Construction of a railway from coast to coast has begun with the approval of the German states.  Unfortunately, said German states want it to go through each of them.  Like right then south, instead of directly south through Italia.  Should be profitable, but it would delay completion.  They want a final word on it before it happens.  This will effect your standing with the German states.  Production of the railway in the Lowlands is beginning though.

A series of trenches have been constructed on the border of Rordalia.  They are manned by a bunch of volunteers.  Sadly, you don't have a very good army to work with, and volunteers is the best you got.  Yes, you do have some careerist military people, but they're held in reserve by the military leaders.  Let the poor people die first.

You send a fresh batch of volunteers and missionaries to the colony.  Hopefully they'll expand it.  I doubt it.  You don't want to know what is happening down there.  Nobody wants to live there.  It is horrible.

Rordalia

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fgerbia does not accept this alliance because they don't see it as feasible.  You are so far away.  It would be like Nev promising to aid the people of Australia.  everyone else acknowledges that you are protecting Fgerbia, except for Fgerbia, who sees it as a proposition that is only for Rordalian interests.

The first batch of underwater explosives are working well, now the only thing is to find a method of propulsion for them, or to just produce them and deploy them places as mines.

Railroad construction to improve agriculture is going well, but it is also cutting into the life style and culture of the cowboys, people who would move cattle from place to place for low pay.  It is a pretty big part of Rordalian culture.  Still it is dangerous, and the railroads are better, just life is moving from the open plains to the closed off plains.

The railroad is directed to have an ending section near the border, to allow the Lowlanders to connect it if need be.  This would provide the ability for either side to send across armored trains mounted with weapons for a quick breakthrough but also make a pretty good profit.

Scandanavia

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A new unit of infantry is created, filled of the more elite careerist troops, to act in small squads.  They will work behind the lines, around the lines, whatever.

A unit of espionage has been created.  Maybe this will leak plans.  We know that Rordalia threatened someone, just not who.  Like the thought that a menacing message may have been intercepted going from Rordalia to Italy, judging by their immediate turn in diplomatic stance from one of nationalism to one of cooperation and passiveness.  And they also clarified their stance to be anti imperialist.  Currently nobody is doing anything in secret, as far as you know.

With a basic consumer industry up and running, the process of creating heavy industry has begun similarly to the lighter consumer industry.  People are still annoyed cheap imports hurting the economy, but cheap imports are also helping the economy as well.  We'll see what happens.

We have a food crisis on our hands, and effectively unlimited land. How could there possibly be unemployment in the agrarian sector?

Now it isn't that the stuff is expensive, but now the stuff your people make is even more expensive and this is hurting the economy because people are buying the cheaper imports from the Low Lands.  Isn't economics confusing?  Next thing you know, people will stop using money because it is cheaper to trade unprocessed wood.

It isn't that you have unlimited land, as most of that land is under developed, backwards and cut off from society.  Also, it isn't unemployment as much as a large concentration of people in certain areas that a good for growing.  Now these people are out of work due to invention, so they have to move.  They choose to work in the rapidly expanding factories that have an almost infinite demand for labor, instead of moving out east.  Lots of stories about people disappearing, parties of robbers suddenly seizing a whole village worth of people to send to their mines out on the border.  You do not want to go east.  You might want to fix that.
