Asexual Reproduction?
« on: October 12, 2014, 02:50:59 am »

Is there a DFhack script for making single gendered(like DBZ's namekians) or genderless races able to reproduce without a partner?

40.5 added that in for egg layers. Considering Namekians are made from eggs, that may work for you.

Pretty sure that it just changed it so that the [CHILD] token was no longer needed, not that both sexes of the creature were no longer needed.

For actually having asexual reproduction, it isn't possible (that I know of) with just the raws alone, but it may be possible with DFHack. There are two methods that I know of.

One would be using the unit creating script to create a new unit on the spot, which may or may not be possible at the moment as I do not know if the spawnunit script has been updated for version 0.40.XX.

The other would be to set a female as pregnant using DFHack. I don't know if there are any scripts set to do this to females at random/controlled intervals, but the DFusion utility in DFHack has an impregnate tool that can make a selected unit pregnant. Though this requires the creature to be an all female race.

Would the latter work in worldgen?

No. impregnate requires a unit, which worldgen has none of.

Well, crap. Okay, let me rephrase this. Is it possible to have a race that reproduces asexually in worldgen?

However, I believe worldgen doesn't check for caste population ratios - just that both castes are present. If you don't mind fudging it, you can probably get a civilization through worldgen by giving it the appropriate caste, but setting its population ratio to very close to 0.

Just remember to set the other caste's ratio up arbitrarily high (Like 10000 or so)
Because it takes both of those into account (So you'd end up with one out of every 10001 of these would be the requisite reproductive caste).

Also I don't know how high the numbers will actually go. It might work to set it up to like 99999, so you have ~.001% of the ones you don't want- feasibly never occurring outside of worldgen. To make it Fun, also select like... their heart... and make it something that evaporates at 10000 Urists. That way they'll die instantly as long as it takes them to bleed out from a missing heart whenever they're loaded.
