-snip-
Not every building in JC2 can be destroyed, but there's far more total destructible terrain than there is in RF:G (but yeah you can't blast through a building to escape from enemies like in RF:G which is super cool), and a big plus for me was having lots of bad guy bases to attack, whereas RF:G only has one moment where you actually assault the bad guys directly in the final mission and the rest of the game the entire map is just populated with a thin layer of enemies that call reinforcements when you cause trouble. And you can do lots of cool stuff with the grapple in JC2, yanking bad guys around and attaching vehicles to things. But JC doesn't have a SLEDGEHAMMER either. :p

Personally JC2 had a lot more gameplay for me than RF:G. There's almost no replay value to the latter, and the multiplayer sucks (except for demolition mode).

About Just Cause 2, I considered it done when I finished the main plot stuff. I had no interest in going around trying to 100% complete all the destruction and collection and so forth, because that's not really all that fun or interesting.

I never finished Deus Ex because it's just too bloody long. I got about 3/4 through, lost my save file, and realized how much work I'd have to do just to get back to that point. I get tempted to play but I don't even want to finish the first level because I've seen it so many times with every combination of endings.
With every combination? Have you ever killed the soldier which shows up to take custody of the NSF leader at the top of the statue? I was pleasantly surprised to find that the developers expected that and took the time to give Manderley dialogue for it. Which is to say, to have his voice actor record dialogue for it, and to script it, etc.

My favorite thing in Deus Ex is going in to talk to Lebedev, locking the door behind me, and sticking a LAM on it. And then while I'm talking, Anna Navarre explosively removes herself from the rest of the plot (and nobody has to kill Lebedev, at least not where I can see it).

One thing I haven't finished but really would like to eventually is The Witcher (the first one!). I'm at the beginning of Chapter IV at the moment.

Most of the other things I haven't finished are either very long (all the Ultima games except VIII), or I found them boring (Borderlands 2, every MMO ever), or I hit a point where I just kept getting instakilled (Metro 2033), or they make me want to break things (Portal 2 - I hate "puzzles," why did I buy this, oh right, because I enjoyed listening to GLaDOS in Portal 1).

Paul even gives you some snark if you start a fight with the NSF leader and then don't actually resolve the fight at all.

I must say that I probably top this list.  Last game I remember finishing?  Hrrm.  I did play through a few games of advanced tactics and winning those.  Still not done with that.  Nope, don't know.  And I've played games since the original Pokemon era.  Get to the Elite 4 and then stop.  I do remember finishing some obscure RPG, but it was really really short.

anything by bethesda.

I don't believe you. As far as I can tell Morrowind didn't actually have a main plot after you met that guy in... Balmora? Wherever. The Imperial contact that immediately gets assassinated. I never found the official plot thread again, so I never finished that one. Too many mods, not enough time.
I don't recall Caius Cosades ever getting assassinated.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Maybe you had a mod that changed that?

Entirely possible. He could also have bugged out? It's been so long I don't remember much more than, he was there and then the next time I went back he was gone, taking the plot with him.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Without mods, he stays right there (unless you kill him), until you progress to the point in the plot where he leaves, which is quite some distance in.

I can definitely sign on with this club.  For Morrowind, I never resumed the main quest after Shirtless-O-Clock tells you to lark off and get some "experience".  For Skyrim, I never went after that ancient ruler's horn, mighty as it may have been, nor did I ever join up with the civil war on either side.  Never finished any of the Deus Ex or Fallout games, and the same for the Mass Effect trilogy, which I've restarted far too many times.  Baldur's Gate, though awesome, has also never been finished, though I did finish Shadows of Amn.  I've stalled out on the Wizardry series multiple times, and while I've beaten the final boss on Etrian Odyssey 2-4, I've stalled out on 1 (because of Untold) and Untold (for no good reason), and never reached the Extra Boss on any.  Demon's Souls, Dark Soul, and Dark Souls 2 all get abandoned, progressively earlier and earlier in the story.  Going one further, I've never even started the Witcher series (though I do own 1 and 2).  On the strategy game front, I haven't properly finished a Europa Universalis game since EU2 (Tyrol Germany best Germany).  The last time I finished Alpha Centauri was at least half a decade ago, and the last Civilization game I finished was Civ4 before any of the expansion packs were released.  The last game of Romance of the Three Kingdoms I finished was almost a decade ago.  Really, the only games I ever finish anymore are the ones that come in bite-sized bits and stick you on a rail from start to finish (Telltale Games), and even those are a bit iffy.

i think the problem is that we have access to too many games these days.  before we can finish one, another comes along and distracts us and we end up never going back.

i remember when i got my amiga 500, cosmic conquest was the first game i ever got for it and sunk countless hours into it simply because i had nothing else.

I'm pretty sure he tells you what to do, or at least gives you a lead before he leaves. It's easy to lose quests in the Journal though, especially if it's the Xbox version where you can't search for key words.

Part of the problem with me never finishing games is I never pick them up where I left them off. I always want to re-experience it with fresh eyes, but also some foreknowledge. And then I stop playing at or near the point I did last time.

Except Assassin's Creed. Fuck trying to restart that series or any game in the series. There's too much crap to do to want to restart, if I ever want to have a prayer of getting through the series. I'm still playing through Revelations.

My current trend is to give every game I can a solid two weeks of play, then move on.

And then there's some games I'm just an obscene procrastinator. Like Darkwood. I don't know wtf is up with me and that game, but I can spend 20 hours just dicking around the starting area. I know where I need to go, roughly what I need to do, but instead I hoard everything I come across and spend the whole day stockpiling more stuff I refuse to use. And then a new build wipes out my save and I'm like "Yeah, let's do that all over again!" I never finish Bethesda games for exactly this reason. I avoid the main storyline, gorge myself on the sidequests and/or gameplay and become completely broken to the point I don't care about the story anymore, it won't be enjoyable in the same way.

In fact I think I'm in for another playthrough of Skyrim after I get my new computer built....it's a vicious cycle. I need help. :(

Bluh, yeah.  I tried to restart AC1 shortly after finishing but there are just too many unskippable cutscenes and long semi-interactive sequences.  I actually like cinematic games, but I was looking to re-experience gameplay.  Even the completely non-interactive scenes couldn't be skipped.  I think you could travel back to the first city, but there wasn't any point.

The problem with picking them up again is that you often feel overwhelmed and lost wherever you are. It's often a lot easier to just wipe the save and start all over because you at least have a sense of direction.
