(SG)Settlers on the Frontier (Setting Out)
« on: October 09, 2014, 08:17:37 pm »

Oh, look another game by Worldmaster. As if he didn't have enough games to pretend to run.

It is the year 18XX, and you, like many other prospective men and women in America, have been sold a plot of land by the railroad companies interested in expanding out west. Now, you are preparing to leave with your family to start a homestead on your new land. You are at the general store to order what you will need for the journey. However, before we get to that, we have to cover who you are.

A proposed extended family to join the party:
Name: Donald Andor
Gender: Male
Age: 61
Companions:
  • Wife: Georgia (55) (x Donald);
  • Siblings: Thomas (54) (x Jacqueline);
  • Siblings-in-law: Jacqueline (50) (x Thomas);
  • Children: Patricia Smith (32) (x Louis), Jack (29) (x Mary), Frank (24), Lisa (21), Charles (17);
  • Children-in-law: Louis Smith (38) (x Patricia), Mary (25) (x Jack);
  • Nephews/Nieces: Beth (23) (Thomas x Jacqueline) (x John), Samuel (19) (Thomas x Jacqueline), Leah (16) (Thomas x Jacqueline), Martha (12) (Thomas x Jacqueline), Benjamin (9) (Thomas x Jacqueline)
  • Nephews/Nieces-in-law: John (30) (x Beth)
  • Grandchildren: William Smith (9) (Patricia x Louis), Sarah Andor (3) (Jack x Mary);
Profession:Donald: Blacksmith: (Metal) Repairs+, Wealth-;
Location Dif: Random
Difficulty: Random
Backstory: The Andor household (such as it is) had often dreamt of a better life and riches far to the West, but its collective wealth has just as often been lacking. Now, with a reasonably cheap homestead out in the frontier, the Andors embark on a long and dangerous (but hopefully fruitul) quest for land and glory.

(Feel free to modify, copy, or completely avoid this somewhat-clunky family, especially if there will be other groups in the party.)

How many previously separate groups should there be in the end? I hardly think the Andor extended family is enough.

Isn't it by the railroad? We should just forgo the wagons and buy train tickets instead.

Depending on who you consider to be too young or too old to hunt, we have 5-8 capable men and 4-7 capable women. Given this, I recommend a total of not less than 9 firearms, with at least a total of 4 muskets or rifles. We should also scale up the ammunition, and in this suggestion, and in my suggestion, I allocate 20 rounds for every weapon.
3 old muskets ($360) + 7 flintlock pistols ($1050)
3x musket rounds/75r ($135) + 7x pistol rounds/140r ($140)
Total: $1685

As for food, I recommend bringing some hardtack to supplement the fruits of our hunting. A few months from now, it will remain exactly as edible as it currently is. Thus, I doubt we will need more than around 200 units of food.
200x hardtack ($200) (Hopefully this is the right price)
Total: $200

Since we intend to open a restaurant for swift food of some sort (and no one wants to eat horse meat and what are these "burgers" you keep talking about?), I strongly recommend that we bring along some animals.
2x bulls ($100) + 3x cows ($180)
Total: $280

Finally, we should bring a few trinkets to trade along the way.
2x small decorated jug ($70) + 3x small decorated pot ($75) + small pot ($15) + bead strings/10 ($5)
Total: $165

Grand total: $2330

(Note: This is only the start of a plan. Please modify before supporting.)

I should have clarified this, but a sack contains about 100 units of whatever. Same with the barrels and small crates. Small barrels contain 50 units. So your 200 units of Hardtack costs you about $60.

Now that I'm not half asleep, I'm going to edit the Belongings spoiler to contain other things that you should have, like things to cook stuff in. And things to sleep in. And things to light the dark. And other useful stuff for a fortress homestead.

EDIT:
Isn't it by the railroad? We should just forgo the wagons and buy train tickets instead.
See: Location Difficulty
There's more rolls this way, and thus more opportunity for !!FUN!! things to happen. >:D
And the place isn't actually that far away; it's only about 500 miles, compared to the 2000 mile Oregon/California journey. This trip should only take a month or two.

EDIT2: There's a lot of stuff I fail to mention, come to think of it. Ah well.

1 sack sweet potatoes, 2 small crates dried fruit (for scurvy)

Total: $100

Grand total: $1930 Cash Remaining: $400
(Note: This is only the start of a plan. Please modify before supporting.)

I included the chickens Kilojoule proposed.  Remember we have belongings and that we may need cash to buy something down the road.
Teal shows what I changed.  I suggest adding from the general store 3 more small tents so every couple can have one, and stuff the rest in the other tent.  Also at least one more axe for extra chopping, and some spare parts for the wagon, as I don't see any on there.
