In the case that we can contribute things that aren't related to gaming at all I have a bunch of tutorials for it as well.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Any screen-capturing software that people would recommend?  I've got an idea, but I need a free one to start recording.
^^This.

There's no good free screen-capturing software that have good editing abilities and don't watermark your videos.

I'll find another program for editing.  I just want one that records video and audio, right now.

Edit: Here's a potential canidate.  Anyone know of any problems that exist with this one?: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub

Edit2: Blender can be used for video editing.

Good, free open source recording software with lots of options: https://obsproject.com/

I use Adobe Premiere for editing. Not free, though I don't necessarily claim that I paid for it.

I've heard good things about Lightworks. It's freemium according to Ye Olde Wikie. I don't recall if there are licensing costs or the like.

...

I also tried out OBS. It looks pretty good - easy to use, reasonably configurable - although it does make my laptop melt. I'll test it on my Proper ComputerTM later on.

Overwolf is free, and I don't believe it watermarks your videos. I'm not sure if it lets you record your desktop, however, like Fraps does, although I believe I used to have another program for that. Can't remember the name anymore.

In order to run it without lag on my laptop, I do have to set the image size to 75% or 50% of the full screen size. Quality is a bit lower, but it runs fine that way. Once I finally get my new computer, I'm really looking forward to being able to record higher quality...

I believe Twitch.tv allows you to download its proprietary streaming software when you sign up for an account. That software can be used to capture video and save to a file.

Is it limited to dwarf fortress stuff only or Is anything created by members of the community permitted?

it'd be nice to do non-dwarfy things
Yeah, I sometimes do Toribash videos, and I have some KSP videos I haven't gotten the opportunity to upload it.

Apparently the obsproject page is recommended.  I'm gonna link it in the OP, mention blender as an editing tool, and link to the channel proper.
