Harlan nodded his thanks to Clair, then turned towards the villagers.

: "We just wanted a place to shelter from the coming storm, but the man who attacked us refused to listen. He's dead now, and so are most of his forces. Is there someone here who might be a little more willing to listen to reason?"

[Solymr]

After a bit of hesitation, a young man takes a step oiut front and speaks up.

Falk... Is he really dead?

[Sirus]

Harlan considered the question.

: "Looked that way. I didn't get very close though, so maybe he's just wounded."

[Solymr]

The man hesitated for a moment before responding.

We would have give you shelter without a problem, but Falk was the tax collector... If Ixion doesn't get their share they get very angry, and they like to take the lion's share. Needless to say we aren't particularly sad if anything happens to him, but we fear retaliation from Ixion...

[Sirus]

: "Just tell them the truth: that he attacked some pirates and they killed him in response. You can even show them the body; last I saw it had a few chunks taken out with an axe. Wasn't any of my group that killed him."

[Solymr]

That part is definitely clear, but what we're worried about is the tax. This year wasn't really productive so we're sort of low on income, and Falk said Ixion raised the tax so if someone else comes to tax us we're gonna be in a bit of a pickle...

[Sirus]

Harlan shrugged. It really wasn't his problem either way.

: "Well, in that case we just did you a favor. It will take time for Ixion to send a new tax collector all the way out here, and you can use that time to try and make a little more money. Or hide what you've made so you can avoid paying very much. Either way, now you don't have a taxman breathing down your neck."

[Haspen]

That you did us a favor is definitely right, and we thank you for it. But now we need to think a way to avoid getting Ixion suspicious on us, because having the tax collector get killed in front of our town and the town not being razed would raise up a few questions. Especially since the king is getting more paranoid by the minute. You said you were separated from the pirates, can their leader come by to talk?

Upon getting her path blocked by a beefwall, the mage lets out a very loud shriek right up to Kyle's ear.
