"Safe? It wasn't, that was the point - it forced carefulness and precision, a naturally headstrong child me to slow down and be careful. I had to be slow enough to detect the traps and serpents, and fast enough to return before nightfall and the wolves came out to hunt."

  "A-ah... That sounds.. I don't want to insult your master, but that sounds like a.. terrible thing for a child... Maybe I see it differently than you, due to how I grew up, but I'm sorry to hear that."

[GiglameshDespair]

"What do you mean? My master is kind. After I lost my eye, he still kept me as an apprentice, even when my potential was spoiled. One must be strong to take on the legacy he is part of."

She looked at the priest curiously.
"How were you raised, then?"

[Ochita]

  "I... At first, I was living on the streets, though I don't really remember much of that, only that I was alone for most of it. Then, I.." Albert shifted, kicking some sand around. After a moment's hesitation, he sighed.
  "I'm sorry, but if you want to know how I grew up, can we wait until the battle is over? I need to stay focused so nobody has to suffer because of me failing them.."

[GiglameshDespair]

"Very well. If you wish, we may discuss this after."

[Ochita]

Albert was still thinking however, and he couldn't help but wonder about it.
  "Ketsuki... You mentioned pain tolerance lessons by your master. W, were they like the traning that you just told me about?"

[GiglameshDespair]

"Some of them. There's pressure points that cause quite incredible pain when struck. It's also useful in it leaves no permanent wounds or disfigurements. If I did well and endured great pain, I was rewarded and allowed to eat. It was a simple, pleasant time."

[Ochita]

  "That... That doesn't sound pleasant at all!"
Any pretense of keeping conversations off the battlefield gone, Albert shook his head at Ketsuki's words.
  "Nobody should have to be put into a situation to suffer pain just to eat, or to survive! I'm sorry Ketsuki, but I can't agree with you! I had to do things to eat too, but none of them involved pain!"

"Well, at least it was voluntary. Other people don't have much of a choice choir boy."

[GiglameshDespair]

Ketsuki raised an eyebrow in confusion.

"What is the problem?" Ketsuki asked in genuine confusion.
"Oh, I didn't have a choice. It was a long way to anywhere else, and as mentioned, the wolves devoured any lone travellers at night, if not the monsters that lived in the mountains.

But I don't see the problem. He raised me like he would have his own daughter. He fed me when I proved worthy of it and taught me to become strong."

Kyle looks shocked
"Ket, that was abusive. No good parent would let their child go without food."

[Ochita]

Albert was quiet for a little while.
  "... I never.. Knew my parents..." He finally mentioned, eyes looking at the desert sands. After a while, he looked back at Ketsuki.
  "But.. What you told me Ketsuki.. Did your master ever do things for the sake of things other than training you?"

[mastahcheese]

Zane observed the conversation as it turned towards their past lives, and decided to bite his tongue on the matter for now.
He looked over at Alessa and motioned in the direction of Rajik, before floating over to F5, keeping slow so she could keep up.
"I guess we'll find out now if they retained their senses."

[GiglameshDespair]

"Of course. Sometimes his colleagues would visit, and I could demonstrate the skills I had learned. Occasionally they would bring gifts, like my headband. On my birthday, I would not have to do any training at all, and he would tell me of the world.

...do not worry. I did not know my parents either, and I do not know their fate, just that they met one. Without my master, I am sure I would be dead or weak, so I am grateful to him."
