Did... Did my guy just elf out?
« on: October 09, 2014, 01:14:26 am »

I was working as a human in adventure mode, going around killing astericks everywhere, when I found a necromancer tower. Decided to rush it, but as soon as my character got near the tower, BAM!!! my character stopped responding to commands and ran forty spots in the opposite direction. What was that? I'm in 40.13.

He did you a favor bro, he knows how strong the undead got beefed up in version 40 and said F that. I have yet to clear one without getting destroyed after one battle.

It's generally not worth killing the zombies, they're quite fast and very durable (good luck getting a hit in through their itty bitty parry knives), combine that with the fact that one failed dodge/block means that your brains are mush and things get rather pointless.

Wow. Adventurers under your control can shake it off and run away of their own will? (Do they actually run away, or do they pick a random direction like Fortress mode dwarves?)

Given how tank-like undead are, you should probably take the hint.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Its conceivable that the game was experiencing a brain fart and the adventurer ran the opposite way due to an issue with accepting commands. Also, are you sure you weren't accidentally pressing another key while entering commands? If the game gets opposing inputs for movement commands, it will do nothing on that axis. Should still respond to other commands, though. I've also had that problem with a sticky keyboard.

I do vaguely recall a bug though involving your adventure being duplicated or something: the duplicate would be on the same tile, and it was attackable and NPC controlled. You could literally start a fight with yourself. I've had companions duplicated in a similar way in the current version, so perhaps the same thing happened here to your adventurer? Can you attack/talk to yourself? No idea how the computer-controlled clone could know about the danger of the tower, though. My companions never run away from towers, and I've yet to see my adventurer duplicated.

I think it wasn't accepting commands. I normally try to flank an enemy, or single them out with a ton of rapid movements, so maybe it stopped me from using the up-down axis when I was maneuvering. I thought maybe discipline effected adventurerers too for a minute. Thanks for the answers.

And, I returned to the tower, and got killed on the third to last zombie.

Adventurers don't get XP in the Discipline skill, so that's probably a good thing. It'd be pretty funny if you retired a superpowered adventurer, got them as a fortress immigrant later, and found out that their newly-emergent personality plus their absence of this one skill caused them to flee in horror at the sight of a butterfly corpse.
