I probably am. I know that one series of gun does do that (looking it up, its the XM8). As for parts and all that, it would be sections, not that many would be sent out, and it would be better than sending lostsa types of guns because it would lend more flexibility, standardized parts, and it would actually shorten the supply requirements, as we dont need asmany different types of weapon parts.

The XM8 is a canceled project, if the US doesn't have faith in it why should we? Besides, having it modular with our untrained and poorly trained troops wouldn't work well. Such complicated guns require more maintenance and parts than simpler ones, like the AK clone that was suggested. We would still need just as many different kinds of parts, especially if we where switching caliber or magazines between types. There are reasons that modern militaries don't have modular weapons, after all.

Why would we have different calibers?

Besides, just because the US abandoned it dosent mean that its abandoned by everyone. I beleve Indonesia uses it.
Although, good point on the complexity...

The 6.8 everyone seems to want to use is made for close quarter urban fighting, making it a poor LMG or DMR. To get it to work at those longer ranges, you would need a different caliber, at least in my opinion.

It was being designed by the US, so it *kind* of does. The only people who use them are PASKAL, and that was pretty much because the over relied on one assault rifle. Which we are going to do, too.

To be fair, this is our standard infantry weapon. There's not going to be such a thing as over-reliance on a weapon here.

There are 5.56 sniper rifles, along with people still using .22

To be fair though, using 5.56 in a sniper rifle is just a plain stupid thing to do. Also, looking up a bit more on the 6.8mm, it looks like it actually would have comparable range, if not better, to the 5.56mm.

We are using 6.8, at least seeing as how that has the most votes. Nobody uses .22 for combat, it was rare even as a sidearm I could only come up with people using it rarely.

There are no real "Sniper" rifles that use 5.56. It doesn't have enough range, most use a lot bigger rounds like the 30-6 or .300 winchester. And for some reason, we decided to go with the short .68, which is made for short guns and short distance. Anything past 500 meters would be impossible with it.

*cough*

It is not stupid, it is niche

No, it is stupid. Those are DMR, not sniper rifle. Completely different use tactically and physically.

*EDIT*

How long have I been putting .68 instead of 6.8? :-[

Yeah, but here's the thing, it's designed as an assault rifle cartridge. If we're using it beyond 300 metres, we're doing something wrong.

For sniper rifles we should use 14.5x114mm. Because our BTR-80  use that.

Why not just go with the good old Browning .50 BMG? That thing has the punch and range for sniping... :P
