I'm impressed.  If anything, you should be giving the advice here.  Let's think?  I remember getting hypothermia a while ago.  Don't dress heavy then take off your clothing cause you are too hot.  You already know that though.  Woo tenderfoot!

I'm not going to click on a TV tropes link, sorry. My mental strength is enough to go alone into Siberia, but by far not strong enough to not get entangled on links after links on that site. :P

And I tried giving advice once here. I saw the "computer advice thread", so I made one for camping and outdoors. No one ever replied. Bay12 is not the outdoor type is seems.

I'm pretty outdoorsy, but a) I'm not as hardcore as you, b) I know what I'm doing pretty well. Otherwise I would have used that thread. If I ever decide I want to go on a cycling or running tour, you can be sure I'll post.  ;)

Haha, I'm outdoorsy, but I know what I'm doing well enough within my comfort zone, and have yet to seize the opportunity to move outside it. If I ever do, the thread will be necro'd.

Good luck and enjoy the trip!

All of my favorite hikes have been about getting from point A to point B in X days. Highly planned trips just lack the feeling of exploration.
I have only hiked in warm and near freezing temperatures so I can't give any good advice.

Are you doing this journey alone?

Yes, I'll go alone, but my girlfriend will come visit me in Japan for a month.

In case someone wants to have a look, I have most of the gear, the bike, etc here. Made some pictures. Not absolutely complete, but gives a pretty good idea.

I wish you luck Meph! And glad you slapped the dorfs nagging you about the wee little cold, that's just the kind of cold where you can't punch snow easily anymore, nor do anything with it  :P
To add, sleeping at -16 without a tent and in just two hoodies wasn't that bad, though I slept on concrete instead of actual ground.

Tops to you and all the other bikers for having an ass of steel.

Very cool how all your gear is set up on the bike. Especially the thermos. :P Is there one on each side?

Edit: (finished scrolling to bottom) Yeah, there is. Makes sense balance-wise. Also the luxury of having tea and coffee on the go at the same time.

Looks like you're bloody prepared at any rate. Have a safe and exciting journey.

The only thing you might be missing that I can think of is sunscreen; for the parts of the journey with exposed flesh(You've probably got this sorted out though)Anyway, this is an inspiring endeavour, truly. Best of luck!

So I just saw this thread, and as an Australian, dear god Meph how can you cope with the cold.

The longest I've ever cycled in comparative cold was 15km @ 8C (including wind chill) in heavy rain - I can't even begin to imagine how cold it is up there.

It was between -10° and -25° at day and between -25° and -45° at night. No exposed skin + wind please, that would have been an issue. I broke through the ice once with one leg, changed socks quickly, went ok, but the boot got covered in ice.

The clothing and camping gear held up fine, I felt over-equipped. Overall excellent fun, I'm sitting in Southkorea now with a mild sunburn, heading to Japan in 3 days from now.
