Probably not going to be a problem in Siberia...

Never been to siberia, but the canadian north is very dangerous for everyone on the road. Drunk drivers, wood carrying heavy trucks going at insane speeds and generally unsafe road conditions. I expect siberia to be similar. The good news is that you hear them from a long distance and there is not a lot of traffic.

I would definitely get a firearm permit for camping in the north here due to the wildlife, but that would be difficult to carry on bike. There is some spray you can buy, but I am unsure how effective those are.

HugoLuman: No wildlife issues.

greatorder: Doesnt apply here. I ride on highways, I'm not one of those road bikers that zip through traffic in the inner city on rush hour. ;)

sneakey pete: yep.

Drakale: Yes, traffic is the greatest danger, but like I said before it is nothing I can influence besides being as visible as possible. No comment on the firearm permit, thats a uniquely american thing. There are no international travellers with guns, period. First border crossing would be the end of their trip. The sprays are illegal as well.

You've got years of experience doing this sort of thing so I don't think there's anything most of us could possibly impart on you. It's really amazing what you're doing and you're also super cool.

Good luck and don't die!

Oh, I learned tons of stuff from the emails I got (from people who do/did similar things), from the bicycle and biketouring reddit, from bikepacking.net, touring documentaries, blogs, especially fatbike reports, race reports like the Yukon Arctic Ultra... Bay12 was just a random stop on the way, because I'm here practically every day anyway. ;)

I hope I'll never stop learning, and thanks for the kind words.

I just looked at the link in your sig, that's impressive.

Tips... Er, take a roll of degradable toilet paper, put it under your armpits, when they are too wet throw them away and change to new ones. Trust me, I'm a sweat engineer.  :P

So, it's terribly unlikey, but... if something does happen, is there a contingency to notify us?

HugoLuman: I can understand how a person unfamiliar with the topic can grossly overestimate the danger, but you have to realize, that what I am doing, is not any more dangerous than any other person cycling on any other road. I am just as likely to die on this trip, as you on your commute to work/school.

People dont die on such expeditions/tours, there are no more remote, unexplored places far from civilization. The worst case is that I am run over, just like any other cyclist. If I have a critical equipment failure (lets say the bike breaks), I have to hitchhike to the nearest town and fix it.

There is a large difference between risk and danger. Yes, there is the lethal danger of hypothermia. Its life treatening and the cold would kill me. But the risk that I face that danger is practically none, because I know about it, and I am prepared for it, both with skills and equipment.

McDonald: I am honestly not sure if you are joking or not. Thats one of the most random things I've seen.  ???

I believe we have at least one Siberian forumer, but I'm not exactly sure who they are. I'd say ask them, if I could point you in their direction. Maybe someone else knows.

I think I'm good for now. I have all the sponsors and gear already lined up, bike is decided, and so forth. I even talked to the three people that cycled to the south pole, and they didnt have much to add, except: Yep, your preparation is looking good, keep me updated. The chances that the one Siberian forum member does happen to know tricks about cycling and camping are pretty slim.

Pisskop: What?

Wait, how does one cycle to the South Pole? I'm going to have to look this up.

There are lots of research stations, and the McMurdoc "Highway". Even on the Southpole itself there are buildings. Infrastructure is there, its just that cycling in snow is harder than walking or skiing, which is what people usually do.
