Hal attempts to quiet his breathing and shakily aims the laser cutter just under head height in the direction the flechette came from. He whispers, "Fire at will," to the nearby technician, hoping said technician actually has a proper weapon and decent aim and proceeds to activate the laser cutter on a high setting. He suddenly remembers that heat-based weapons are horrendously ineffective against water-based targets like humans unless they can manage to flash boil tissue and hopes the attacker does not know this.

(I think I will go beyond just not incorporating the information for the others and also not read them. Maybe spoilering will become practical when the remaining slots are filled up? Also, the railroading is fine, and I really think I got lost with the silly details and coffee.)

Peter

You make your way to the sonic showers, a series of contained cubicles with lockers for your jumpsuit.  You undress and step into the shower.  The process is... strange, but stops just short of unpleasant.  A small amount of water is squirted all over your body, followed by a deep thrumming from the cubicle walls.  You can actually feel the water humming on your body.  About ten minutes of this later, a deep rush of hot air removes the water and allows it to evaporate.

You don't entirely understand how, but you actually feel cleaner.  Huh.

Ford

[Luck: 1]  The technician has... a concussion hammer.  He gives you a look as if you are insane, but steels his nerves and braces himself on the corner's wall.  [1+2 v 6] Letting out a mad scream the technician launches himself around the corner and by sheer luck manages not to get hit by the three flechettes the intruder shoots at him while he closes.  You peek around the corner and can see the man, a bald figure of eastern-European caste, in the black uniform of the security corps and wielding a shredder pistol.  One shoulder of his uniform has been torn off to reveal a peculiar tattoo, a downward arrow in a hexagon. You hear a click as he turns the pistol from 'pulse' to 'shred'.

[6+3 vs 3, 1+2 damage | 4 vs 2+1, 6 damage!]  The spray of flechettes tears into the red-shirted technician's side, but somehow only turns a relatively small part of him into mincemeat.  He outlasts the strike long enough to bring the reverberating, thuddering hammer down upon the man's skull.  In less than two seconds, the concussive force shatters his skull open, spraying pinkish matter across the wall and ceiling.

You exhale in momentary relief, then hear the agonised screams of the technician as blood streams freely from the mess of ribbons that used to be his other arm.

Hal looks around cautiously and decides to inspect the assailant's body for any identification despite an increasing sense of nausea at the sight and sound of the bodies and through the screaming, mutters in a vain attempt to calm himself: "[Curse] it. The Provost was right. We really do need guards here. Shame it probably wasn't Skye's group."

Ford

[Data: 6] There's no insignia, but you capture what's left of his face with the imager on your datapad and it manages to filter out about six possible candidates, five of whom are tech or med staff.  You pick the security officer; "Jan Ernovich, Security Officer 2nd Class".  Born and raised in the Russian Commonwealth, moved to Mexico in his late teens, connections to some radicalist groups.  Won the 'lottery' to be part of the Unity security staff, direct C/O Security Chief Corazon Santiago, under X.O. Yang.  Evaluation by Psych Chaplain Godwinson: "Narcissistic personality traits, strong sense of superiority to those perceived weaker than himself, minimal compassion.  Despite excellent combat record, recommend against appointment to security staff."

Your thought process is somewhat interrupted by the desperate screams for a medic from your companion.

Without spoiling much, what message pops up on your datapad is rather dependent on his action.

Ford sends an urgent, hastily written request for a medical team.

urgent: need medteam btwn mess & eng now; 1 tech, sev but loc shred; 1 unid host, dead, request staff officer for id; need uncomp sec staff to accompany to eng; thanks

Having sent a request, he cuts off a large strip of the security officer's shirt with the laser cutter and checks the technician's wound for whether or not closing it up is plausible and beneficial right now*.

(* Because disturbing any embedded flechettes would be a horrible idea)

Ford

[Medical: 4] You make a judgement call, given that the flechettes appear to have all gone through the flesh in the process of shredding it; you can see some of them embedded in the wall beyond.  The wound is more of a mess of shattered flesh, but you do the best you can to bind it with the shred of uniform.  You hold the pressure for one, two minutes, waiting for anyone to arrive.  A message flashes on your datapad.

Lal sdng help.  81(!) unacc sec staff.  Wkng Yang, 40+.  Cap Glnd rfsng acss to armry.  When sit stbl, meet at armry. - Z

Peter

As you make your way down the corridors, your datapad bleeps urgently and an alert flashes brightly on it.

Medical emergency, corridor 7C-a!  Report immediately, urgent assistance required!

The datapad shows you a direct route to take, and marks the location of a first aid box along the corridor.  [Athletics: 3+1]  You race along the corridors, stopping briefly to grab the first aid box from the wall.  After nearly two minutes of hustling, you come upon a grisly scene; a black-uniformed security officer currently missing the back and side of his head and a technician with part of the black uniform bound over an obviously grave wound, screaming his head off.  A grey-suited officer - Ford, you think - is knelt beside him, frowning at something on his datapad.

You rush over to the technician and pop open the medkit.  Scalpel, tweezers, scissors, antiseptic spray, synthflesh spray, painkiller, a basic set of tools but enough to work with.  [Medic: 4+1] The first thing you do is jab a hypo full of painkiller into the tech's neck.  The screaming starts to subside.  You then cut off the wrapped uniform and examine the mass of scrambled flesh beneath.  Severed artery, muscle damage, possible nerve damage, single embedded flechette.  You remove the metal with the tweezers and drop it into the first aid kit, then spray the wound, first with antiseptic and then with synthflesh.  The second spray forms a smooth, plastic-like coating over the injury.  The damage requires surgery, but that should at least keep the blood inside for now.  Your datapad flashes.

If alive, get patient to medbay. - Lal

Waiting as instructed, Hal's thoughts turned to developing a clotting boost. Perhaps that bright fellow with an uncanny knowledge of the cardiovascular systems of multiple species might be a good assistant for this project. Since the mutineers would likely have no access to advanced facilities especially after landing, it would be especially advantageous for the University. Profitable, even..

The wording of your action is a little confusing, so I'm going to operate on the assumption that you call a tech and that the order was given to Ford, the science officer (because the security officer here is dead).

------

Dr Rail Armage

You brush out your hair after the sonic shower, glad that someone had the good sense to pack grooming equipment aboard the Unity.  Staring at the mirror opposite, you tie your hair back and take a moment to examine the deep green uniform of the Xenobiology crew, currently worn against your recent de-cryogunked skin.  You were informed by the tech that awoke you that Dr Skye, the chief Xenobiologist, had marked you and about twenty others for early awakening.  Apparently the drive had suffered some sort of fault and over four hundred crew had been woken up to deal with it.  The pre-packed gel dispensers can only deal with so many rations, so Skye's hydroponics labs need managing to force a sped-up fruiting cycle of the edible plants.

Your business there (fundamentally glorified gardening, given your skills) is non-urgent, so you were allowed a little time to freshen up.  You straighten out the rest of your uniform and head towards the Hypdoponics deck, Skye's gardens, on the other side of the main cylinder.

As you pass through the gap between the mess halls and Engineering, en-route, you hear the muffled but distinctive retorts of shredder pistols and equally muffled but distinctive screaming.  You bring up your datapad and scan the map of this level; you're only three corridors away from the armoury - maybe the security staff is already gathering there?

Ford

As you sit, studying the body of the presumed Officer Ernovich, you lose yourself in thought about potential medical devices.  You are suddenly brought out of your reverie when you realise that no security forces have arrived yet.  You're alone in this corridor, with a laser cutter, a dataprobe, that tech's concussion hammer (damn it, what was his name?) and... a shredder pistol.  Okay, maybe not all bad.

Or maybe not all good, either.  You hear the muffled sound of shredder fire and screams from nearby corridors.  Your datapad beeps, and a message and a map pop up.

Armoury.  Now!  Z.

Peter

You call another medtech from your datapad, who quickly arrives with a stretcher and helps you carry the injured technician to the medbay.  A hurried walk later, you arrive at the medbay and hurry the man onto a waiting sickbed.  Dr Lal is already there and prepped for surgery.  He speaks to you as he starts to examine and operate on the man, periodically gesturing to pieces of equipment for you to hand him.

"Engineering's gone into chaos, mutineer security officers are trying to seize the bay and its equipment.  Scalpel.  They called the captain to make demands as the fighting begun.  Turns out they're led by one Corazon Santiago, our very own Security Chief.  Needle, sutures.  I'd ask Yang how the hell this happened, but we've had no contact from him since we ordered his pod thawed."

Another medical tech hobbles into the room, carrying a man by the arm over one shoulder - another red-shirted engineering tech, his leg nearly blasted off by shredder fire.  "There's more to come in," says the tech.

"Damn it," says Lal.  "Peter, set up a triage.  Anyone who'll live for now, to one side.  Anyone I can save, to me.  Anyone you can save, you take care of.  Anyone we can't, to one side.  Start with that patient there."
