Peter winks at Dr. Lal as a sign of keeping an eye on the med staff
He turns around and looks at Dr. Hal Ford, "Ya, I've got a bit of athletics training. Shouldn't be a problem for a short bit. Though I do have my duties as an engineer so I can't have that biting into me helping with the task at hand" he looks around for a moment then remembers that Dr Hal was wanting coffee. "Here's a cup of coffee on the house, you still want it" *gives Dr. Hal a ration token

"Great! Now off to the mess so I can actually think."
After a token flip, Dr. Hal begins shambling toward the cafeteria. Turning to Peter, he asks, "Do you really think this is necessary? Reassigning a few dozen engineers as security? What are we even defending against?"
He snorts, "Aliens? Sentient custom greenhouse stuff? Unity's AIs?"

Peter chuckles a bit then begins following Dr. Hal.
"Well I'm not just an engineer per-se, I'm a general assistant. That's why I was helping with the cryotubes and going to be the temp security and helping with whatever engineering problems they need asistance with"

[follows to the cafeteria, time for some grub]

[6/6] On your way to the mess deck you both swear you catch sight of a shadow at the edge of your vision.  You turn round to see nothing but an empty corridor.  After another few looks nothing turns up, so you continue on your quest for refreshment.

"Cafeteria" is generous.  The lower level of each of the eight cryopods contains a mess deck consisting of several long steel tables and benches (far less than would cater to the full 10,000 of each pod) and rows of dispenser machines along each pod.  Approaching the dispenser machines you see each has a screen and a point to which you can touch your datapad to deduct ration tokens.  The screen displays the following culinary delights:

Code: [Select]
Water Hot/Cold - 0 Tokens
Coffee Gel - 1 Token
Beef Casserole Gel - 1 Token
Pork Taco Gel - 1 Token
Vegetable Hot Pot Gel - 1 Token
Curry Gel Red/Green - 1 Token
Egg Salad Gel - 1 Token
Rice w/ Apricots Gel - 1 Token
Porridge Gel - 1 Token
Brandy - 5 Tokens

The machine dispenses three steel cups.  Into two of them it squirts hot, steamy water, followed by a sort of dark brown gel that spreads until the whole mixture looks approximately like black coffee.  Approximately.  It tastes... palatable.  It has the right rough taste as coffee, and as far as you can tell has the right amount of coffee.  You wonder if Dr Skye's coffee plants survived the trip.

The third cup dispenses a cup full of slightly reddish, translucent gel.  It is thicker than the coffee gel by some way, and taking a sip of the (rather hot) gel you find it definitely tastes of beef.  Beef and potatoes.  None of the texture, it feels like you're swallowing hot gelatin, but it does at least sort of taste like beef casserole.  The information screen helpfully posits that the cup of gel contains 40% of your RDA of pretty much everything.  The Unity designers might have found a way to make a worse meal than MREs, but at least you won't die of malnutrition.

As you sip your meal and coffee-ish hot water, a team of six red-suited technicians arrive.  Apparently they've been assigned to you, Dr Ford.

Peter

One of the techs nods to you.  "Fine, sir."  He turns to Hal.  "Dr Zakharov said you had tasks for us, Doctor?"

"Ah yes. Go down to the engineering deck, get some concussion hammers and laser cutters, and patrol this module's entrances and exits. I want no one stealing any coffee—I mean entering or exiting without the Academician or the Captain's approval." Dr. Hal continues to drink the coffee gel and tells Peter, "I guess you can go thaw some more folks or whatever it is you're supposed to be doing now."

He looks at everyone,"Anybody know where the showers are?"

Peter

You get some directions to the shower facilities.  On your way off, you get a little buzz from your datapad.  It's from Lal.  Check the cryopod logs.  Captain wants to see exactly how many crew Zakharov ordered woken up.

Damn it.  Well, the nearest set of crypods is on the way to the sonic showers, so you make a stop by a datajack and plug your pad in.  [Data: 3+0]  Let's see... five hundred and five pods open total.

Ford

One of the technicians hands you a datapad; "Zakharov said you'd need this."  You take a glance at the datapad and there's one message for you.

Hal, stop screwing around with the coffee machine and head to engineering.  Get your team equipped and head to the drive chambers.  We're going to try a test pulse of the engine.  - Prokhor

God damn it, the man must be watching you through the security cameras.  You take the team of technicians down to engineering and pick up a selection of tools; concussion hammers, laser cutters, even a couple of dataprobes.  You take a laser cutter and probe for yourself, because why the heck not, and head off towards Engineering.  One of the techs attaches himself to you, the rest head off to patrol routes.

[Stealth:4 v 2+2] You are rounding a corner along one of the corridors leading out from Engineering when you spot a dark shadow out of the corner of your eye.  You react instinctively before the thought can even register in your brain, throwing yourself behind the corner and hauling the red-shirted technician with you.  A steel flechette thums past you and buries itself in the bulkhead behind.  Someone has a shredder pistol, set to pulse mode.  Someone is trying to kill you.

----

OOC: My apologies for a smidge of railroading, just trying to get things to a more exciting point where the characters are able to do things other than dull, menial tasks.  On a related note, there are still two slots left for crewmembers, so if anyone else fancies playing come on in!

You can read them, your character just can't know the information he isn't there to know.
