I dug a 1x1 channel from a pond in front of my entrance.  I did this to encourage dwarves to "clean up" walking in and out of the fortress.  I had read elsewhere this was a viable option to a waterfall room (which may be later in the game).

Concern coming up now is that the channel is filling up (currently at 4, assuming it will go to 7).  Will this preclude them from being able to use the cleaning ditch?

Dwarves will not path over 3/7 depth.  Which defeats the purpose.  From 2/7 to 3/7 is how deep you want it to be.  I bucket fill ditches or hook up a filter.

The problem with using a stagnant pool for water is that pools will generate water when it rains.  Watch out it doesnt flood.  Or better yet hook up an entrance/exit floodgate to drain old water and add new water.

Either way do you math twice to ease the process.
