I have recently gotten to experiment with an obsoleted HP Proliant DL380 (G4) datacenter server. (Looks like U2 rack mount)
It appears to be a cast-off from a server room upgrade, but it sports dual XEONs, running at 3.4ghz with 800mhz FSB, and 6gb of RAM.

It still has data on it, as it has a "working" copy of Ubuntu Server still installed on the RAID disk array. I dont have the root password, but I am fixing to change that momentarily with a knoppix live-cd. (Whoever junked this thing knows nothing about data security, clearly.)

I fully intend to see what it does when confronted with DF's aggressive memory use.

After screwing around with a knoppix livecd, and getting nowhere with it refusing to load the cciss driver (needed to access the hardware raid array), I have elected to install server 2008 on it instead.

It had a server 2008 installer DVD in the drive on the outset, so whee. Sadly, that installer dvd is 32bit only. Meh.

Ok, It is now fully under my horrible dictatorial control, running server 2008.

I have DF loaded on it, and it is working. I have it trying to generate a very aggressive world right now.

Does anyone have an unplayable FPS DEATH fortress I can load on it for stress testing?

PTW. Try talking to the guy who's running Roomcarnage, DS. That fort includes a device for melting glacial ice with liberal amounts of magma, causing constant caveins, melting, re-solidification, and obsidianisation. Probably one of the most horrific stress tests you can put your FPS through.

downloading roomcarnage magama deluge of 1210 from DFFD.....  Gonna let this really aggressive worldgen finish though. 180yrs of 10,000yr worldgen with max everything, and 200 civs.

(wanted the history gen system to gutbust memory accesses)

Looks like the "really large worldgen crashiness" issue impacts datacenter grade appliances too.

DF allocated 1,987,567 MB of memory while doing worldgen, and died.

Will load roomcarnage now.

Jupp. as DF is not 64bit (for more than 4gb ram) or large adress aware (that makes for me DF crash on worldgen at ca 3.9 gb ram usage. Used a file found somewhere on this forum to flag DF as large adress aware)..

Btw. looking forwards to see how this goes..

Disappointing.


The bottleneck on this system is the beyond crappy video hardware baked in.
Sports an ancient AMD Rage XL video chip. After installing the divers for it, i notice in dxdiag that there is ZERO accelleration.

That said, the game plays at about 20fps on a large forest embark.
I started a fire.
The fire is burning aggressively all over the embark, and is not really dropping the FPS below 18.


It has PCI-X slots (which can theoretically accept a PCI video card) but I think I have wasted enough electricity running this jet engine.
CPU performance wise, it is holding its own pretty well. However, video performance wise, it sucks balls.

I doubt the renderer is bottlenecking you, but if you want, you can try using the ncurses output which doesn't use a graphics accelerator at all.
