Well, you can spread false rumors about certain things.  Maybe NPCs can lie now?  And maybe if their liar skill is good enough...

No survivors.  At least until you can shuttle them to your dark dungeon and keep them captive forevers.

Also maybe being a human being and not a distinctly extreme sociopath?

It's not that unusual that there are rumors circulating that a particular person has died. Or that they eventually learn of those rumors.

What's a little silly is if they believe the rumors about their own death. I guess elves are a little gullible...

Here's how I imagine it:

Elf 1: Help! Save me!
Elf 2: ...yep, I just found out that after the war, there were lots of rumors that I, too, died in combat. It was inevitable.
Elf 1: What? I'm just out for a stroll.
Elf 2: You started the conversation. Anyway, I guess that means I died. People wouldn't just lie about a serious thing like that. *shrug*

Adventurer: No, you *will* die.
Elf 1: [screams while being hacked to death]
Adventurer:  Now you have died.
Elf 2: It was inevitable.
