Would it be possible to mod a way for dwarves to plant trees?

A farmable plant that when processed makes logs sounds completely doable.

Not an experienced modder, but it sounds doable.

Yes you can do that. It may require a processing reaction to take a plant body after harvest and turning it intko a log, rather than immediately being a log, but that's not hard to do. However, they will be crops, not legit multitile trees. So in a world with multitile trees all over, it probably won't be super believable.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

In a word: no, you can't plant actual trees, you can only wait for them to grow on their own from saplings, taking care not to tread them dead. Gav and Zubb already told you how to simulate log harvesting.

If you're not opposed to using DFHack, it can definitely be done - a plugin could monitor farm plots and filter out ones that are 1x1, are fertilized, and have had a "tree seed" planted in them, then destroy the farm plot (and seed) and replace it with an actual sapling.

In Vanilla, though, it can't be done.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
