climbing in fortress mode
« on: October 04, 2014, 12:25:03 pm »

is completely disabled now? i made a custom civ that starts with expert levels in climbing, as well as stance climber (like cats do, climbing with either hands or legs) but they refuse to climb at all. in fact they just sit around at the bottom of a 1z deep pit of rough soil walls, aparently unable to path out and take jobs - i didnt test if they also prefer to starve to death, but i guess they would.

which is sad, because i would love to build my fortress around the idea.

As far as I can tell from my observations Dwarfs so far have only been climbing trees, mostly down. However they do definitely use the jump ability if it shortens a path considerably.

Do you have a meeting zone? Dwarves are supposed to climb out a pit if they figure out that they're stuck and path to a meeting zone. It may take take a while for a dwarf to figure out that he is stuck in a pit.

Dwarves generally don't climb when pathing to labors. Fleeing and fighting dwarves may climb. Idle dwarves used to climb more often, but that was supposed to be fixed so they only climb when they think they are stuck.

Yeah, climb-pathing takes a lot of processing power compared to normal pathing so it only runs every now and then. If you do build a fort around that idea, it'll probably kill your fps.

In, I believe, .40.12, I had a miner climb out of a partially-constructed well shaft because I wasn't sufficiently attentive to its job status.

Last time I toyed around with climbing and jumping I found that dwarves were generally unwilling to do so in order to do jobs (specifically, planting/harvesting) - instead, they just spammed me with cancellation messages about the destination being inaccessible. This is, of course, after an idle dwarf trapped on the far side of the one wide channel casually climbed along a wall in order to return to the rest of the fort.

I think that's intended behaviour, and actually fairly reasonable when you think about it. Would you want to climb a sheer rock face with no safety equipment every day to get to work?

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

well it does make sense for dwarves, but they need to learn it in the first place and even then they move at snail pace. for creatures that are used to climb in their daily life it would be the natural thing to do (as well as building their fortresses with that in mind).

pathfinding mechanism regarding jobs should take the possibilty of climbing into account, and could then discourage any creatures that cant actually climb properly from doing so unless absolutely necessary. even with no levels in climbing a dwarf stuck in a hole might consider climbing out eventually, increasingly so when hes about to starve.

I had a Dwarf stuck in a hole and he just refused to climb out that 1 z-level to get out. Had to have him build stairs. However Troglodytes that were lurking in the caves were constantly climbing up into my fortress. So it seems that climbing is part of the pathing algorithm, just that Dwarfs don't like to do it.

This would be a nice feature, but since it would mostly only come in handy for modded races, I think Toady would probably rather spend his time working on features that will significantly improve the unmodded game.

I think he just needs to work out the kinks in the pathfinding when climbing is involved.

A quick n' dirty solution would be to assign climbing a higher pathing weight.  Kind of like how traffic orders work - just assigning a higher weight (thus lower pathing) to a climbing tile.  As a plus, you could conceivably apply weights to other tiles too.

A minus is more pathing.

Goblins can climb down in Fortress Mode. I learned that the hard way.

I've seen miners hanging on walls when the other miner channeled out underneath them.  They then path to the nearest safety on the same Z-level (instead of climbing down 1Z).

Had some zombies that chased dwarves up four or five levels of my above-ground fort and onto the roof, where they, once cornered, immediately climbed over the edges safely.. One even hung from the side for a month or three of dwarf-time :>

Had a lot of floors to channel out and got a couple dwarves stuck up a single z-level above safe ground, where they proceeded to absolutely refuse to climb down til stairs or ramps were made (I'm hoping the new stepladders will be a much faster solution for this..)

I've watched zombies climb fluidly, much more like cats than shambling half-rotted humanoids, to the point that I'm wondering if building regular tall walls is even worthwhile.. Seems like they really take off when they see a dwarf up on a wall (which is where they'd be shooting from, ideally)..

I've got a minotaur stuck in a pathing loop, climbing 2 levels up a tree to beat an emu with a leather shoe til it passes out and falls, rinse and repeat for 4 fort-years now.. Not sure why the emu never moves, either..

I've got a baby blind cave troll in a smoothed pit that, as far as I've seen, has never made a single attempt to climb to freedom (from some other posts I'd read about pitting being useless now I expected a struggle so went with a 7 z-level pit, totally smoothed with a lip over the edge just in case plus drawbridges to seal it up if things got really crazy)..

I can't recall ever seeing a dwarf climb except to flee from an enemy.. The minotaur is climbing to attack, the zombs are climbing to attack, the dwarves climb to avoid attack, while the emu refuses to climb to flee (except I'm pretty sure he's glitched at this point; he's got half a page of scars built up from the minotaur so far)..
