Q. on melting ice from underneath with lava.
« on: October 03, 2014, 06:21:55 am »

Does lava melt 'up and diagonal across' tiles? The water source tiles of a brook on the edge of the map turn to ice in winter. I can't mine out the edge tile underneath it so I need to know whether lava only melts ice _directly_ above it or not.

(I could do 'fortifications' but that would only be temporary because the lava would disappear with time, right?)

Magma will only heat the tile directly above it, sadly. Also, it'll only happen if the magma is flowing - if you fill it so that there aren't any of the little fluctuations in depth, it won't even melt the ice directly above it.

...theoretically, you could build a floor over the source tiles and pump magma over them instead of under... I've never tried it, though.

That sucks.

That also sucks, but should be easy to arrange.

Hmm, yeah, that would have the same problem as fortifications though. The lava would flow away off the map edge.

Oh well, I'll experiment and post if I find anything useful.
