embark advertised neighbours not present
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:51:20 pm »

I played a bit on a new game, and was wondering when the first goblins would show up.

2 years later, still haven't received any visits (got humans and dwarven caravans though), i hit the "c" key to check neighbours , and goblins were not cited, although i was pretty sure i had checked before embarking and they were listed on embark site screen.

To be sure, I just double checked (retire the fortress and go to the "reclaim" menu, then check neighbours), and I confirm goblins are shown.

Is this common ? it's the first time i notice it.
(I didn't embark on an island)

Neighbours are shown like this on embark screen

and when in the fortress, (after unretiring)

(I'm surprised because i had human caravans previously)

I always had an impression that civilization screen lists only those who visited you. Am I wrong?

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

To the best of my knowledge, a member of that civ has to arrive at the embark (seen or unseen) before they will appear there.  However, I could be wrong.  Certainly, non-Mountainhome civs do NOT appear in the list on day 1 of the embark.

The fortress is  4 yours years old now, with about 300K wealth (didn't have a miner up to a few months ago), that's a long time with no goblin coming isn't it ?

Even in 34.11, it can be some time before the goblins arrive, especially if you are far from any civilization.

Possible there's another bug going on, there was a problem with goblins civs never attacking your fortress in some past version, it was fixed, but maybe there are situations in which the fix isn't working.

I don't know if it's related, but when you play in adventure mode you often find tents with people in them sleeping forever (as in they will never wake up) and with the error.log showing

camp order missing parent -- army will camp forever

As adventure mode and fortress mode are now more related than in 34.11 , maybe it's possible there are situations in which goblin (or any over invaders) armies can be affected by some bug making them just camping forever and never reaching the fortress.

I have a 6 year old fort, 11mil wealth embarked next to a dark fort and still no sight of any goblins.
My previous fort in a different world had 7mil wealth and same thing, not a single goblin.

I call shenanigans.

I suspect it's related to the new functionality of having the attackers actually come from the goblin site's population. If they don't have many residents, they won't be able to send many (if any) attackers. Make a copy of your save and check it out in legends mode to see how many residents there are at your neighbor.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

This has given me the opportunity to look a bit at legends mode and try to figure out the information displayed.

in the last increment (year 120) of the historical map the map cell where my fortress is located appears to have no presence of any civ.
Even though I can see some goblins presence (the idle fiend) 2 tiles north.

I tried exporting the legends info and then opening them in legends viewer but it crashes when looking at that "idle fiend" civ :( even after running the cleaning script as I use the workflow dfhack plugin and it seems to mess with legends.

Using the world map in legends viewer i can find the closest goblin site from my fortress, it's in 58,22 whereas I'm in 53,29. that should be close enough, shouldn't it ?

digging a bit more, seems to show that quite a bunch of goblin even closer disapeared last year

in year 128, i wrote "ME" where i settled(in 125), all green are goblin sites (of a different civ though : the evil of yelling)

in year 129

looks like something big happend in between those 2 dates !
