removing constructions via collapse
« on: September 30, 2014, 09:30:28 am »

So I decided to do my first cave in today on purpose. It kicked up a lot of dust, which was pretty cool.   :)

The structure was floor extending from a wall, to a downward stairs, and I designate/removed the first floor leading outwards.

I have a feeling maybe dust knocked the dwarves off the wall? One of them died and a few were knocked unconscious, falling from the safe part in the process. It was quite a ways down.

Still, really neat.  :)

Cave ins will generate a dusty shockwave that displaces and stuns dwarfs. That's usually harmless unless they get displaced onto an open space and fall multiple z-levels or are directly hit by items.
You can use supports linked to levers to avoid this (pulling the lever removes the support).

Thanks very much. It was pretty cool seeing the dust.  I think next time I'll try fire and smoke!  :)

Um, I have another question.  Let's say I want to build a floor leading off a ledge in an "S" pattern.  Do I need to wait for each side of the S to be completed or can I paint it all in with a mouse in one go or something like that.  Ideally I'd like to be able to lay out stuff a lot faster than I have been.

I never use the mouse, but you can declare the enclosing square:
Code: [Select]
xxxxx
xxxxx
xxxxx
xxxxx
xxxxx

then remove the parts you don't want in the finished path

Code: [Select]
xxxxx
    x
 xxxx
 x
 xxxx

And the dwarves will build the full thing.  Just make sure they can only reach things that are supported.  They will stand on a bridge (for instance) and build something next to it, despite bridges not being load bearing (thus collapse, dust, blood).  They will not build diagonally, though.

Man I wish I could edit my post.

You using a phone or something? Otherwise, there should be a Modify button in the top right of your posts. If you're able, please condense them.

Anyway, sometimes dwarves will even stupidly stand on the very tile they are removing or on the wrong side of a construction being built, even if there is a place for them to stand beside it. You will probably want to build your projects slowly, in pieces, while keeping an eye on things.

Mister Adams,
How many licks does it take to get to the [candy] center of a Dwarf Fortress?

Yup yup, not a problem. Didn't mean for you to completely erase your posts, but move them to the main post so they were all together. Up to you, of course.

Did you get the catwalk finished? What was it for? Connecting archer towers?
