The battle rages on, but eventually the living triumph over the dead. Bits of skull and rotted bone surge through the water around your feet as you catch your breath, but you don't get reprieve for long. The top of the gate is forcefully ripped out of its mooring and flung out into the dark distance, as a huge flaming giant with insect-like mandibles stomps through the gaping hole. It chitters and screeches, swinging a large fist into a soldier foolish enough to stand in front of him. The hand alone is half her size.
"Gallant company! Fall back!" Davora shouts, as his soldiers immediately follow his command, "Keep any undead stragglers from getting through! The mercs and I will deal with this one."

EDIT:
Forgot to mention the escalation die is at 1!

Time to shine.

HONOR DUEL

Maruko spares no thought for caution as he throws himself at the creature, shouting in challenge at the beast. As he charges, his blade slides to try and slice away the demon's tendons.

...He went without us...
...Maruko does not look back...
...charging to glory...
Katoya says quietly, writing in her music sheet with a shaky hand.

Action: More Battle Chant on the Thing!

If triggering Elven grace, more battle chants!

If triggering "Stay Strong" cast it on whoever is being attacked (probably Maruko), use "Pull it together" if someone is in need of healing.

"Thing's on fire. Ethnon can help!"

Move into range and try touching the Thing inappropriately from behind with a properly applied Mage Hand to distract it.

And if time and cantrip mastery permits, shoot it also with some of those frosty Enlightened Eyes.

A small tube deployed from Duncan's wrist, the business end aimed along his hand. He took a moment to peer down his outstretched arm, pointed at the giant, while the tube began to glow with chaotically changing colors.

Gather Power.

"...Oh."

Faced with such a monster... Alicia froze. She held her bow in her hands, but made no motion to launch an arrow towards the monster. Everything seemed quiet, somehow. She barely noticed her companions moving to attack the creature. A memory of waht she read earlier rose unbidden...

Recall from the book (i.e. use the book) about this monster.

Katoya infuses her crossbow bolts with bardic magic. The first misses by a mile, but in the blink of an eye, she's reloaded and fired again, hitting the demon directly in the chest. As it shrieks out, more in anger than in pain, Maruko feels a little sturdier and gains +2 AC, although its shriek causes Katoya to stumble over the words to her song.
Alicia hurriedly flips through her library book and finds the demon's entry. A Fire Demon, and from the scale comparison in the book, this one is small for its kind. According to the description, Fire Demons are Fire Giants who have become so tainted by demonic energy that they lose their mind and sense of self. It appears to be weak to cold and resistant to fire, although that would probably be obvious, and although it seems most Fire Demons can use weapons or tools, this one does not wield any, seeming to prefer swinging wildly with its chitinous fists.
Maruko shouts his challenge at the demon and charges, his blade slicing through muscle and tendon in its leg and coming away soaked in green ichor. The demon responds by swinging out with its other leg, before realizing it cannot stand on its lame leg alone, and it falls to one knee as Maruko dodges to the side.
Davora takes this opportunity to maneuver around to flank the demon, which flails wildly at him. Unfortunately, Davora is caught by one of the demon's claws, and stumbles, a bloody wound left in his shoulder.
Duncan's arm-cannon glows brightly, and would do damage to any staggered enemies if there were any. Meanwhile, Kyle steps around him to attack the demon from the raised walkway. His axe tears into its shoulder, coming away with the same sticky green ichor.
Finally Ethnon runs around behind the demon, giving it a wide berth, before using a mage hand to smack it on the rear. It jumps and looks displeased, swivelling its head around to look at Ethnon, who shoots frosty eye beams at its face and the flames on its body go out.

It is Kat's turn.
The escalation die is at 2.
The Fire Demon is staggered.

Maruko takes the opportunity given by Duncan's distraction and flame-putting out to charge once more; this time, however, he uses the creatures's lame leg as a stepping stool, jumping from it to plant one foot in the creature's back and shove off of that, trying to get even higher. As the beast tries to throw him off, he thrusts his katana into it to keep from falling, clinging before using it as leverage to split the demon's flesh yet further apart, creating a small gap in it's hide as he shouts in triumph. Still utterly focused on the beast, the samurai rips his weapon free before plunging it down again, deeper, though the shaking this induces throws him off, katana still in hand.

Perhaps his fellows could exploit such a newly made weak point...

Kiai smite!

Seeing the demon stagger before her companions, a fresh wave of courage filled her. She brought up her bow, and snapped off a pair of shots to the demon's eyes!

The Fire Demon is staggered.
((Huh?))

The swirling colors finally reach a bright, white glow and blast forth a fully charged Chaos Bolt into the beast's underbelly. The tube begins to groan as it cools.

((I'm not even gonna bother calculating damage this time. You guys kill it this turn.))

Everything seems to happen in the span of a few seconds. Alicia sends an arrow into each of its beady bug-eyes, effectively blinding it. Its screech of pain is cut short by the pair of crossbow bolts that enter its throat. It chokes as stick green ichor flows out its mandibles, and while it attempts to pull the bolts out and clear its airways, Maruko bounds up its body and hacks at a gap in the chitinous plates on its shoulder. He halfway succeeds at lopping off the beast's arm before it shakes him off, but Kyle  jumps up onto the opposite arm and runs along its back, jumping down to sever the remaining connection. As its arm flops off, twiching and splashing in the water, Duncan's chaos bolt slams into the armless shoulder, spraying more chunks of flesh and ichor into the air. The demon begins to fall backwards as Ethnon's eye-rays freeze it solid, and finally, Davora shatters it with a resounding blow from his shield.

Scanning the horizon from the tunnel, you find no more evidence of demons or undead. Davora straightens, wiping the demon's green (and now frosty) blood from his shield. "Good work! We have won this day! Let us go back to check on-"
The captain is cut short by a loud roar from above, and the ground shakes so much as to threaten to knock you off your feet. Davora has a look of horror on his face. "That was no demon..."
The shouts coming from outside only confirm his fears.
"DRAGON!"
