Lasic eye surgery
« on: September 29, 2014, 01:28:17 pm »

Is lasic eye surgery a good idea? What are the side effects? Anybody ever had it done? If so how well does it work?
I have to wear glasses or contacts and if I don't I can't see for crap but I'm not sure if I'd want to get eye surgery or not

From what I was told by my doctor, it's quite expensive, and frankly should only be done if eyeglasses really bother you.

What if a job you wanted required 20/20 vision with no eye assistance (glasses contacts)

I know very few jobs that require that, most related to piloting aircraft. So it is quite unlikely unless you specifically seek them out.

I can't think of any job like that.

And laser surgery has to be done again every once in a while iirc.

...do you want to become a commercial pilot? That's the only career I can think of off-hand where you'd need 20/20 vision. Probably if you wanted to into space as well. Most jobs should be fine with contacts or even just glasses, though.

Edit: Every time.

Navy Pilot
So you want to be that then? If you think the job is worth it, then go for it. Otherwise it's down to how confortable you are with contacts or glasses.

It's actually weird that the requirement for a perfect 20/20 vision for pilots remained with all the automation and technology we developed in the flight department.

Well would you want a military pilot to accidentaly blow up a school because they couldn't see what the building was but knew it was near where they had to drop the bomb

That's not a very realistic scenario, Cryxis. How much do you know about being a pilot?

I think burningpet's point is that that scenario will almost never come up any more. We have smart bombs and guided missiles and all that fancy stuff these days, and it's entirely possible that bomb release is automated too.
