Can dwarf give food to merchants?
« on: September 28, 2014, 08:17:56 am »

I had a dwarven caravan on trade depot, and the trading was finished, so they were idling until early winter when they would leave. A dwarf performed a couple of times "give food" job. She carried some food to the merchants and left.

Can dwarf give food to merchants? I haven't noticed that before. This is a .34 game, though. But I think if it is intended as such in .34, it isn't likely excluded from .40s.

I think I may have seen 'give water' jobs appear for merchants/guards myself, not in DF2014 though. Haven't done any fortress mode in the new version yet.

Seeing as how merchants (and caravan guards) never experience hunger or thirst
  • , this sounds like misidentification of what's been going on. Did you by any chance burrow your broker in the depot? Burrowed dwarfs can go very deep into the hungry/thirsty range if there are no provisions inside their burrow, but other dwarfs may take "give food/water" jobs to provide for a citizen in need.

The obvious solution of course is to not burrow your broker in the depot and set the depot to "anybody may trade" - has no downsides and removes all the hassle of getting the notoriously unwilling brokers to take the trading job.

  • if you drive them mad, they'll become hungry/thirsty and eventually expire, but insane units don't generate feed/water jobs.

There's no burrow around trade depot, and I usually cancel "request trader" as soon as the trading completes. At that moment, I checked around the depot with "v", and didn't see any fort member. But it is still possible that I just didn't notice some stray dwarf.

If a dwarf in some circumstance would try to give food to merchants, I'd say there's nothing wrong with it. It is amusing to watch.
