Yep a tabletop games general thread. Talk about your games, build funny characters, talk about the physics of games, General Thread Stuff.

Just uh.

Play nice.

So for my story, now that nice formatting is out of the way,

I was playing with a group I've been playing with for a while as a Crusader in the prepackaged adventure, "The Red Hand of Doom". Essentially, giant hobgoblin army and worshippers of Tiamat.

Anyway, we're infiltrating an old keep being held by a forward scouting party of said army. The wu-jen casts us a smoke ladder to get to the top of a tower. The staircase is an open spiral down to the bottom, and we can see a bugbear down there, obviously the leader because he has his own room.

So, I get to thinking, we've got the drop on the guy, right? Why not get the drop on him? I as the DM how high we are, and he says it's about fourty feet. I tell him I want to skydive onto the bugbear. He makes me roll a Jump check. I'm untrained and I'm wearing full plate.

I make it and the bugbear sorcerer is squashed like a bug.

PTW

And since I'm doing that, I might as well mention that I'm currently looking for a good martial arts system. The criteria I'm most interested in is players being able to make up their own techniques, sorta how D&D wizards have spell research, but it should take more to get these things off than having an open spell slot for the day.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

My first proper D&D campaign, a few years ago. 3.5 ruleset

I'm a fighter with a party of about seven other players. They're all practically veterans, save for my brother, a rogue. So were all just travelling along a road with our pack-mule in tow when we notice a narrow hole just off the side, with a weird blue glow coming from it. Being the curious types, we immediately tie off a rope and start descending down, one by one. Things don't go so well as half our party start failing their climbing checks and go tumbling down a lot further then they should. It is soon discovered that the cave itself was very steep, practically empty and the blue light was actually from a crap-load of boring fluorescent fungi.
Since everyone was having such a bad time moving around down there, I decided not to follow and just waited by the mule while the others sorted themselves out. This turned out to be both very lucky for the mule and bad for me, as a dozen or so kobolds suddenly swarmed over the hill, heading straight for me. As everybody was now stuck in that cave and tumbling down beyond the ropes length, I was pretty much reduced to fending them all off by myself while they tried to scramble back out.
Eventually, my brother managed to climb out of a different hole, halfway between me and some of the kobolds I'm shooting at with my bow. I end up accidentally hitting him three times.

Yeah I am pushing this back alive...

We need a thread that doesn't quite need to be starved into non-existence.

Anyhow...

I am currently trying to make my first attempt at Call of Cthulhu but don't quite understand how to run it successfully yet. I know I can never get the horror element to get off well but the investigation one is an entirely different manner.

I think what I need to do is research into the many adventures posted for the system over the years to get the general idea of how to do a more freeform.

My favorite being specifically investigations that are rather isolated to houses or small communities.

I think the key is allowing multiple ways to find out the same solution while allowing the players the possibility to delve deeper.

If you had asked a month ago, I would have recommended backing the Silent Legions Kickstarter. You can still get it when it comes out, but you missed out on the preview PDF and the discount.

I need more solid examples then rule systems. Preferably with layouts, rolls, and stuff.

Though I should keep my eye out on Silent Legions.

Seeing as this thread isn't actually dead, I'll post this little idea I had.

You say wizard, but how about a human wu-jen/bloodmage?

Because I'm a wizard. Also, it's kinda hard to multiclass at level one.

To start, you're going to need to play a human. This qualifies you for the regional feat (assuming your DM is fairly lenient in this regard) Bloodline of Fire. It gives +2 to your CL when casting Fire spells.
Where did you even find that? Is that DnD 5 stuff?
