Replaced PSU, BIOS won't post
« on: September 27, 2014, 10:22:04 am »

Fuck my life.  As if I didn't have enough shit to deal with.

I upgraded my computer because I stupidly felt like maybe I could have something nice and first it turned out my old PSU was bad.  It was either broke or the dual 12v rails couldn't put out enough current.  I replaced it with a Corsair RM850 and now the bios won't post.

At first I thought it was the 24pin connector which wasn't wanting to go in all the way but it still won't post and at this point I don't know what to do except take it apart piece by piece and figure out what's wrong.  I'm not really in the head space to deal with that shit right now though.

EDIT:  I don't know why I posted this early.  I wasn't finished.  Hang on.

My PSU is a Corsair RM850 and my Mobo is a Biostar TA970.

Edit:  Put the old PSU back in, still won't post.  The PSU probably volt spiked my shit.

Basic stuff first:  Make sure you plugged in the 4 pin power connector by the CPU, and of course any power to the video cards.  Did you touch the memory?  Make SURE it's firmly seated, to this day I still don't get them all in there like 1/3 of the time :p

When you turn the power on the PSU does the motherboard light come on?  When you press the case power switch does the CPU fan start?  Does the CPU fan stay on?

Do you have a motherboard speaker you can attach to the mobo speaker pins?  I know it's too late to get immediate help from, but geez people if you're gonna be messing with the mobo please PLEASE spend the two frickin dollars and ebay a motherboard speaker.  The beep codes can save you hours of frustration and parts swapping.

I have a speaker.  I've been troubleshooting it and yes.  It's a corsair and corsairs have fucky cords and when you combine a fucky cord with the naturally surly 24pin you've got a half hour ordeal trying to jam that shit in.

So I think I unseated the RAM in the process.  Removing the RAM one by one and putting them back in eventually got me posting with the old PSU.  Now I'm deciding if I've got the balls to try again with the new PSU.

EDIT:  And it's running with the new PSU.  Yey

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
