119 emotions, eh?
« on: September 26, 2014, 09:25:42 pm »

So, what oddities will this next update bring? Will dwarves who crave structure and like shields get excited over mandates? Will dwarves who are easily aroused, attracted to strangers and have no self control start exposing themselves to the Outpost Liaison? Will Urist McMilker grow a little too attached to his favorite yak cow?

I'm waiting for a multitude of stories about how one depressed dwarf's self-loathing lead to insanity, death and tantrum spirals.

Lol, I don't think it'll go there.

I can see some being real romantics or romeos though.

Sounds like the thread for wild speculation :D

"Urist McFeely has been somewhat disappointed with the general state of things. He thought a joke was awful but forced laughter lately. He was ridiculed for creating artwork depicting bunnies recently. He vomited due to the stress of an awkward social situation recently. He felt covetous of another's fine jewelry recently. He hid a rotten fish in Umost Stinkroom's fine Cabinet recently. He created an engraving detailing his displeasure of dwarves with short beards recently. He had a nightmare in which he was attacked by a giant snail recently. He formed a distaste for the word 'cushion' recently. He was lightly injured by a constipated bowel movement recently. He decided that nobledwarves secretly orchestrate the oppression of lesser dwarves recently. He formed a cult whose goal is destruction of all the world's bins recently. He cried from accidentally dropping food in mud recently. He took an angry tone during a conversation concerning persimmon logs with a family member recently. He was annoyed by slow traffic in the hallways recently. He was mocked for his average singing voice recently. He brooded over not receiving invitation to a social function recently. He has lost interest in hamsters and their fluffy cheeks lately. He was morally disturbed by disliking the taste of alcohol recently. He confided in a friend concerning his mortal fear of cave adaption recently. He received the unfortunate nickname of 'Stinky' recently. He isolated himself due to gossip recently. He complained at the hospital recently of anti-depressant side effects. He was scared by a creepy sound in a dark hallway recently. He heard disturbing rumors of a terrifying cult recently. He saw a strange craft in the night sky recently. He questioned his sanity when his food turned into insects recently. He talked with a remarkable demon about pacts recently. He decided that everydwarf was secretly allied against him as a matter of religion recently. He has gained interest in sharp blades and ambushing recently. He has fondly monitored and recorded the daily routine of others recently. He developed the hobby of passively threatening the lives of close friends in jest. He admired own exceptional 'cobra man venom' Barrel recently."

Quoting from the update: "usually through the stress/stability measurements which replace the "happiness" meter"
I love how with the introduction of new emotions in to the game, the state of any given dwarf will no longer be presented in a scale from miserable to ecstatic, but rather with a scale from stable to madness  :)
And every one of those 119 will influence the state of any given dwarf. I might reconsider the way I recruit dwarfs in to the military...

Urist McTrader enjoyed cleaning himself with horse fat soap recently. Urist Mc Trader enjoyed cleaning himself with Cavy Sow fat soap recently. Urist McTrader enjoyed exercising recently. Urist McTrader enjoyed cleaning himself with piglet fat soap recently. Urist McTrader enjoyed criticising Urist McBroker's clothes recently. Stress/Stability is going to bring some new !FUN! to fortresses.  Will tantrum spirals still be possible?  Easier? Harder?

I suspect that not even Toady knows at this point...

I find myself frantically scrambling to figure out what all the emotions could be or how they work: "like happy, but also a little wistful" or "sangry" or what?

I didn't know so many feelings existed.

Given how much things are different, we probably should just throw out the current concept of a tantrum spiral.

There is no way of him knowing considering he just threw in so many variables. One of them being unbalanced and the dwarves that suffer from it might snap very easily.

I like current situation. Don't see a reason to change it.

"Lar Bustbored is dead. I am almost overcome by grief" - kills another man - "Hal Habitcraze, slayer of Lar Bustbored. I'm a little angry" (these were humans, but dwarves react in the same way). If real people were transferred to the world of DF, then most of them would be shell-shocked, and the rest would be psychopaths. I doubt there's need for many emotions.

I wonder if emotions will add in crimes of passion, like planned murder...

I really do hope we see murders, especially from dwarves with high cruelty trait or anger, or a combination. Or murders if another dwarf kills a family member in a tantrum.

You're just hoping that your dwarves are in strange moods 100% of the time with all that talk about love.
